Chris Beck x Reader
I loved The Martian, but I'm having a hard time grasping Dr. Chris Beck's character since I only saw it once in the theater. When it comes out on DVD I'll be much better with writing him because I'll see his mannerisms and behaviors a lot more. Either that, or I'll get the book and hope that that gives me some more insight. Anyways, this is super cliche and way overused for this character, but enjoy!
You were in your room, simply floating along and fiddling with a small device that you had created to pass the time. It was a bit of a makeshift rubix cube, and you found it enjoyable when you were off duty, which happened to be right now. You were a technician aboard the Ares III, which had gone to Mars some time ago, left, realized their guy was still back on Mars and alive, turned back around, grabbed him, and turned BACK around to head home once more. Your crew was a tight knit group, all except for you. You had sort of always been the outcast for a majority of your life, never really finding your niche or where you fit in in the grand scheme of things. Because while you were happy to call people your friends, you couldn't help but feel like they would drop you in a moment's notice.
Here, up in space, it felt no different. Although here, there was one exception. Doctor Chris Beck was your exception. From day one, he was the only one who kept coming back, no matter how many times you would stutter or be too overwhelmed to speak. No amount of awkward encounters seemed to phase him, and he would always be back for more. The thought of your fellow astronaut made you smile, and you released your cube from your grip and allowed it to float around the cabin. You danced as well as you could in the gravity free space as you heard the voice of David Bowie ringing through the ship. Commander Lewis, the Commander of the Mars mission, was very into disco-style music, but she was also very into David Bowie. She taunted the crew with the song 'Life On Mars?' quite a bit, and you were the only one that actually found it funny.
You chuckled and spun the cube in the air, floating upside down in relation to the room. There was something quite freeing about just floating there, something very peaceful. This peace was easily broken by the opening of the door. It hissed as it slid open, and a happy Beck entered the room. He immediately laughed as his eyes landed on you, upside down, spinning a metal cube in the air.
"What is that thing?" He asked, moving closer to you to examine the cube. You handed it to him, maneuvering yourself into an upright position.
"Makeshift rubix cube. I made it out of some spare parts," you explained. Beck looked at you, eyebrow raised questioningly. You rolled your eyes playfully. "Space is boring!" He chuckled at your childishness.
"It really isn't if you think about it. Just look out there, all of those stars are light years away, most of them are probably dead already, we're just seeing the light that's been travelling for years and years on end. And think about all of the planets and solar systems that we know nothing about. We can barely get to Mars, and that's in our solar system. I mean, there could be planets just like our own Earth out there, and we would never even know it. So really, space is pretty freaking cool." He was looking out your window with a smile, before he turned back to look at you. "But there's no way I'm coming out here ever again, of course."
You laughed, nodding in agreement. "I've had enough space and being an astronaut for a lifetime. I like Earth, I'll stick with Earth where I can get a decent wifi signal."
Chris smiled at you in with something you didn't recognize in his eyes- adoration. He adored you. No, he was head over heels obsessed with you. You didn't quite realize it, but he was insanely nervous around you (don't blame yourself, he played it off well). The only issue was, Lewis would literally skin him if he ever tried to act on it. So what was he doing right now?
He was acting on his feelings.
There was a small pause where you both just kind of smiled, neither one finding it awkward or strange. You just reveled in the moment that you had, basking in each other's presence. Chris sat for a moment, unsure of how to go about showing you his feelings. He tiled his head at you as you leaned back slightly, as if getting comfortable while floating in the air. Suddenly, he grinned and grabbed your feet, pushing them. You let our a surprised squeak as you began moving faster than usual towards the wall. You reached your hands out, touching the wall and pushing off of it to get back to Chris. You reached him and he was smiling innocently.
"Beck, you jerk," you scolded him jokingly. He feigned hurt, placing a hand on his chest.
"What? What did I ever do to you, (Y/N)?" He asked, wiping away a nonexistent tear. You sighed dramatically, looking off into the distance.
"You ruined me, Beck. That's what you did. You ruined me."
He gasped. "Oh no, that's terrible!" The overacting on both of your parts was intensely cheesy and you both found it hilarious, as moments later you were doubled over clutching your stomachs as you laughed.
"Can we promise to never do that ever again? Please?" You asked, wiping away a tear. He let out one final laugh, nodding.
"I can happily promise you that." He ran a hand through his hair, as it had become tousled and wild during his laughing fit. You took this moment to scan your eyes over his simple attire, which was a NASA sweatshirt with matching sweatpants. You found it adorable when he was cuddled in a sweatshirt like this, so you couldn't help the smile that reached your face.
"Take a picture, it'll last longer," he commented cheesily, a smirk evident on his face. You felt the intense blush sweep across your cheeks, and you looked down and bit your lip in embarrassment. Beck chuckled. "Hey, don't be embarrassed! We all look every once in a while," he hinted, staring you down carefully to see if you'd pick up on it. Of course, your eyes immediately went wide. Your head shot up to see Dr. Chris Beck staring at you with a small smile.
"W-wait, just to clarify, you m-mean that-"
"Yeah, I look every once in a while. At your face, of course. I'm not a total perv. But I'd be a fool not to see someone so beautiful when she's standing right in front of me. Or, well, floating right in front of me." He laughed lightly. You looked down once more, covering your face with your hands as you blushed a bright red. "Hey, no, you're cute when you blush! Don't do that!" You felt Chris's hands carefully pull your hands away from your face. You opened your eyes and he was much closer than he was before, holding your wrists lightly so you could pull away if you wanted to. But you didn't want to, you simply sat there and looked at him. You could feel each other's breath on your faces, you could see the details in his eyes, you could lean in and-
Suddenly, he did it for you. He leaned forwards and pressed his lips to yours. You gasped in shock, freezing for a moment. You soon melted into the kiss and put your arms around his neck while his hands rested on your hips. You pulled away moments later, breathing slightly heavier than before from the lack of oxygen. A smile graced both of your faces, and you didn't dare move from the position you were in.
"But Beck, we can't. It's no allowed," you whispered. He laughed.
"We can break a few rules, god knows everyone else on this ship has." You couldn't deny this fact, as the entire decision to go back to get Mark was basically breaking the rules.
"Lewis is going to kill us."
"Hey," he whispered to you, wrapping his arms completely around your waist and pressing his forehead to yours. "Who even says that Lewis has to find out any time soon? Sure, she'll figure it out eventually, but we can slowly ease into it. It'll be okay. Do you trust me?" You nodded furiously.
"Of course I do, Chris. Why wouldn't I?"
"Then you'll trust me when I say that Lewis and the rules and everything... It won't get in the way of anything, okay? Screw the rules." And with that, he pressed his lips to yours again.
I hope that was okay, and I hope it wasn't too terribly cliche. Thanks so much for reading! Comment below or message me if you have any requests! :)
