TJ Hammond x Reader
Requested by @BBuchananBarnes. I wasn't entirely sure if this fit the description of what you were wanting, but I hope it's okay! This is a TJ Hammond soulmate AU where TJ thought that his soulmate would be a man, but they turn out to be a woman. If that isn't what you were looking for, please tell me and I will gladly write another one for you!
You kept a fast pace as you walked, one hand clutching a book to your chest and the other gripping your phone. You were rushing, and you knew it was dangerous to walk too quickly without watching for the people around you, but you didn't care. You were late to work, and you couldn't get fired. If you missed another payment on your little apartment, you were sure to get kicked out.
The streets were more busy than usual today, full of people shuffling around each other and moving towards who knows where without a second thought about anyone around them. It was infuriating to you in your hurried state, and you couldn't help but groan every time a person slowed to check their phone or look around to check where they were.
Of course with your luck, you ran directly into a huge group of paparazzi. They all crowded around the door to a nearby building, which you were pretty sure was a hospital of some kind. You let out an annoyed huff with each flash of a camera around you. Your head only snapped up as the group jumped into life, moving forward and shouting to whoever they were there for.
"TJ! TJ look over here!" They all shouted. The air was filled with the sounds of pleading photographers clicking away at their cameras. You furrowed your brows as the hair on the back of your neck stood on end, and you felt the urge to stop and wait to see who this TJ guy was. Your hand flashed down to the string of numbers on your wrist, and you began to look down at it.
Your eyes caught a different set of numbers first, however. Instead of seeing the countdown you were looking for, they saw the time on your watch. You gasped as you realized how late you really were and quickly rushed off and away from the frenzy of desperate paparazzi.

A week had passed since that day outside the hospital, and you couldn't shake the feeling that you had made the wrong choice. You wiped a hand over the diner counter and brushed off some of the crumbs as you waited for the next customer, lost in thought. What if you had stayed that day? What if you hadn't been so invested in your work, desperate to keep your crappy minimum wage waitress gig? A sigh passed your lips and you shook your head, brushing your hair back with your hand.
"Stupid..." You muttered to yourself. "It could have been him and you just ran off. Idiot."
The bell on the door jingled, and you felt it again. The hair on the back of your neck rose and you felt a pit in your stomach. You took in a sharp breath as the numbers on your wrist tingled. You looked down at them quickly.

Your head bolted upright, and your eyes landed on the customer. He had a gray hoodie on, and the hood was up to cover and shadow his face completely. He reached up and brushed the hood off of his head. Bright blue eyes met yours and you both gasped. Your stomach twisted and turned, and you had to grip the counter to keep your hands from shaking. It was him, he was here. You found him.
Suddenly, you realized who this was. He wasn't just any guy off of the street. This man was the son of the president. Not only that, he was the first child in the White House to come out.
As gay.
This was TJ Hammond, the gay son of former President Hammond. And he was your soulmate. You could see his shock becoming confusion as well, and he looked you up and down with a quizzical look.
"I-I don't... I don't understand..." He whispered. "I always... Thought you'd be... Y'know-"
"A guy?" You finished his sentence, realizing he was a bit scared to do it himself. He let out an amused huff, nodding. "Well don't ask me, I don't know how this stuff works. I can't say I've ever heard of this happening, though."
He let out a small chuckle, but you could easily see through the gesture. He was terrified. He was confused. You knew this wasn't the moment he was expecting, and this wasn't the kind of publicity he needed. He didn't need people finding out that his soulmate turned out to be a woman. He didn't need the criticism and hate he would get for having a female soulmate after coming out as homosexual. You weren't sure if he could handle any more on his plate than he already had, and that was why you found yourself walking out from behind the counter and putting your hands on his shoulders. TJ's eyes stayed trained on you the entire time, and you could even see tears forming. You just met him, yet the fearful look on his face still broke your heart.a
"TJ, are you okay? Do you... Do you want to just forget about this? About us?" You asked.
"No!" He quickly shot back in a panicked state. You jumped at the volume of his voice, and he quickly continued in a much softer manner. "No, please. Please don't go." He pulled you towards him, wrapping his arms around you and burying his face in your neck. You hugged him back, sighing happily at the feeling of being in his arms. "What's your name?" He asked, voice muffled.
"(Y/N). (Y/F/N)," you replied simply. You could feel him smiling, and he swayed back and forth a bit.
"(Y/N). I like that." His voice was much calmer now, and he seemed to be over his initial shock. You didn't release the hug until he did, and that took a couple of minutes. "The media will have a field day with this one for sure," he commented, brushing a hand through his hair. You gave him a small smile of reassurance.
"Hey, it'll be alright. I'll be with you every step of the way, and so will your family. The people that matter will understand the situation," you soothed his nerves as best you could after just meeting him. It seemed to help a bit, as he looked down at you with an adorable goofy smile.
"It's just so weird to think that I've told myself I was gay all my life, and now my soulmate isn't even a guy. I guess I wasn't expecting it," TJ said, putting his hands in his pockets. You nodded.
"I get that, but you didn't know. All you knew was that you were into guys, and you didn't like girls like that. That's perfectly fine, TJ. You are whoever and whatever you feel that you are. Don't let anything define who you are other than yourself." You knew your words were cheesy, but it was the best you could do under these unconventional circumstances. "I'm proud of you, TJ Hammond."
He replied with a simple smile, and he wrapped his arms around you once more. Sure, it wasn't the soulmate he was expecting, but that didn't mean he didn't want to be with you. He would love you unconditionally and regardless of what the media said about him, about you, and about your relationship. All that really mattered in the end was that you found each other.
Oh jeez, I don't know if I liked that one too much. I love soulmate AUs but holy crap it's hard to not make them overly cheesy and rushed. I guess I've always been into more of the cheesy falling head over heels romance stories, so that's always how these oneshots turn out. God dangit. Again, if you'd like me to rewrite this differently because it wasn't what you were looking for, please don't hesitate to tell me! I'll totally do it again!
Stay street, stay unlit, stay alive.
