Bucky Barnes x ReaderThis is another soulmate AU, this one requested by @KrissiJones (and anyone else who wanted more soulmate AUs), and this one is inspired by the Tumblr post about people seeing when their soulmates write on themselves. Not sure how long this will be, but I hope it's cute! Enjoy!
You had been put down your entire life, judged for one simple fact: you never saw any signs of your soulmate. While all of the other kids in your classes would stare in wonder as the lines of ink appeared on their skin from their soulmate somewhere in the world, you would sit and wait for anything to appear from your own soulmate. But it never did. You would run home crying to your parents after your classmates told you that you probably didn't have a soulmate, that you didn't deserve one. At first, you obviously didn't believe them, because you'd never heard of someone not having a soulmate. But as time went on, you started to wonder if their words held some truth to them. What if you really didn't have a soulmate? What if you were meant to be alone?
All throughout your life you would stare at your arms, waiting for something to happen. Each day you would lose more and more hope of ever seeing your soulmate. After high school, you were scouted out by a secret organization known as SHIELD to become an undercover agent, and you had been there ever since. You were one of the best agents they had, willing to go on any mission and do anything they needed of you. Besides, you didn't have a soulmate to worry about coming home to.
The Winter Soldier couldn't afford distractions in his line of work. Of course, he wasn't always aware of what his distractions were, but he knew they were there. HYDRA knew it too. So when the ink lines began appearing on his skin one day, he wasn't sure how he felt. He wasn't sure mostly because he wasn't used to emotions, he wasn't used to having feelings at all. It wasn't surprising that he didn't know what was happening. But no matter how he thought he felt, he knew that the lines fascinated him. They were like a security blanket to him whenever he felt a mission going south. It didn't matter how many times they wiped his memory, because the intricate designs were always there. They couldn't be scrubbed off, because they hadn't actually been drawn on his own skin.
Bucky was scared- no, he was terrified. He had been thrown into a whirlwind of insanity following his escape from HYDRA, and the only thing keeping him sane were the words and drawings that would randomly appear on his skin. He would look down during a meeting and grin as a shopping list appeared on his arm. He would sit on the couch in a t-shirt and shorts and watch in wonder as lines turned into intricate patterns and designs on his knee. The writing kept him afloat, and one day he decided it was time to reveal himself.
"Yes, mom! Yes! I got it, I promise I'm okay! I can take care of myself, I promise. I know it's a big change, moving to New York, but I swear I'll be fine. I just need to get these boxes unloade- no, mom! You can't help! Please, I swear I'm fine," you argued back and forth with your mom, the phone tucked between your ear and your shoulder as you lugged moving boxes around your new apartment. The view was beautiful, and it had been set up by SHIELD so you have a specific viewpoint of the city.
You were just about to say goodbye to your mom when something on your arm caught your eye. Your gaze flashed to the skin on your wrist, and you gasped as the ink began appearing. The phone clattered to the ground and you immediately heard your mom yelling for you from the other end. You didn't care, though. You didn't care because you were too busy staring at the word that had suddenly shown up on your skin.
Hi :)
It wasn't much, but it was enough to get tears streaming down your cheeks. You couldn't tell what you were feeling. You had built your entire life around not having a soulmate, and suddenly you have one? Where had he been all these years? Why hadn't you heard from him until now? A sob escaped your throat and you shakily picked up your phone, telling your mom that you would call her back before hanging up.
