TJ Hammond x Reader

Requested by @Alaaseba, and this is a possible trigger warning for anyone who has issues with alcohol or drugs. Enjoy!

"I promise, I'm fi-ine, just calm down!" TJ spoke into the phone to you, and you just scoffed at him. He was trying to trick you. He was trying to act like he wasn't drunk, but his voice wavered in a way that it only seems to do when he's been drinking. Of course, anyone else would have just taken it as a normal stutter or maybe wouldn't have noticed it at all, but that wasn't you. You weren't just anyone else. You had known TJ since you were kids, and you knew all of his warning signs.

"TJ, you know you can't fool me. I can hear it in your voice! I'm not an idiot and you know that," you replied in frustration. Your fingers gripped at the roots of your hair as you paced the wooden floors in your house. He groaned back to you.

"I never said you were an idiot! I'm fine, I just-" you heard glass breaking from the other end of the call, and immediately you were rushing over to your car keys. "Oh, whoops."

"TJ?! Are you okay?" You were shouting now, rushing around and grabbing your coat before storming out the door.

"I'm okay, I'm good. The vaaaassseee might not beeeee..." He drawled. You cringed as you heard the glass moving, and he hissed in pain. "It's fighting back!" He cried out. In any other situation, this would be hilarious, but right now you needed him to be okay. For once, you just wanted to see your best friend happy.

"Hey, don't touch it you idiot!"

"Well now who's calling who an idiot?" He retorted, and you heard him sniffle a bit. "I'm bleeding..." He muttered, and you could picture him just sitting on the floor in the midst of shards of broken glass, gazing down at his bleeding finger in confusion. It broke your heart.

"Hey, listen TJ, I'll be there soon, okay? I'm heading that way now, I'll be right there. I'd like to stay on the phone with you until then, though, is that alright?" You spoke softly, realizing that he was on the verge of breaking down. He was realizing what he had done, how he had broken his promise to you, and he was going to lose it. You needed to calm him down before that happened.

"Oh my god, no. No no no," he whispered, and you muttered a curse underneath your breath.

"Tommy, hey, just take a deep breath for me. Can you do that? Just take a deep breath. It's okay. It'll be alright." You heard him taking in a shaky breath, and you knew he was definitely crying at this point.

"I did it again... I did it again, I'm so sorry," he sobbed into the receiver. You were on the verge of tears at this point, but you bit your lip and held them back. He couldn't hear you crying, he wouldn't be able to handle that. You could lose him, and that was the last thing you would ever want.

"It's alright, Tommy. I'm not mad. I understand. I should have been there. I shouldn't have let my phone die and not recharge it. I'm so sorry, I should've been there when you needed me. I'll be there soon though, alright? We'll get some ice cream and some coffee and get set up on the couch and we'll watch some movies. It'll be fun! I've been meaning to get us starting up movie night again."

TJ huffed. "Don't do that."

You furrowed your eyebrows even though he couldn't see you. "What? Don't do what?"

He sighed, and you heard his hand rubbing his face before he spoke again. "You know what I mean. Don't blame this on yourself. Don't act like this is your fault, because it's not. It's my fault. It's my fault that I'm screwed up, it's my fault that I broke this vase, it's my fault that I got drunk again, it's my fault that you're rushing over here, it's my fault that you're so worried over me that you don't think you can live your life. It's my fault and I know it, so don't try to take this on as your own." If his words weren't slurring together constantly, you might have believed that he was sober with the way he was speaking.
