Your hand sat stiffly on the head of the dog next to you. He tongue lolled out of his mouth as he panted happily, his ears flopping around as he moved his head to look at all of the people around him. He had never seen so many people in such a small space, and it amused you to see him in such an excited state. His big brown eyes locked onto a young girl peering out from behind a seat a few rows behind you on the plane, and he tilted his head to the side. The little girl giggled at the dog, and he quickly looked over at you.

You chuckled, shaking your head. "No, Buddy. You're not allowed to go back there," you whispered to him. Understanding the word, "no," he quickly turned back to the front of the plane and continued his happy panting.

Your hand had fallen off of the head of the large golden retriever and was now shaking at the the thought of what was to come. Tears pricked in the corners of your eyes and your hand quickly moved to pet the dog again. He sensed your stress and moved to place his head in your lap, eyes gazing up at you in concern. Your fingers carefully scratched behind his ears. The tears dropped into your lap and you bit your lip. What was he going to think of you now? You had changed so much, physically and mentally. Would he still love you?

Your eyes shifted to look at the wheelchair beneath you, the one that held you up and supported you after the accident. Your eyes now moved to the foot rests, where your legs should be sitting comfortably. Instead, however, the space was empty.

You had been out on the field for a routine scouting mission when you realized you were standing a bit too close to an enemy explosive. You tried to turn tail and duck for cover before it went off, but you were just barely too late. Your legs were beyond the repair of any surgery or procedure and had to be amputated as soon as possible.

Now you were being shipped back home with a wheelchair, a new dog, and a new outlook on the world. You had seen some awful things, things that kept you awake at night and you knew would continue to keep you awake at night. You knew that nothing would be the same again.

You planned on surprising your boyfriend of three years at his latest movie shoot, which happened to be Captain America: Civil War in Atlanta, Georgia. You were flying into Atlanta and you had a ride to pick you up and bring you to the filming location. He didn't know what was happening, and that couldn't scare you more. He had been distraught when you left, but that was a while ago. What if he found someone else? You had, of course, spoken to him since then, but your emails were always short and sweet, while his were long and detailed. You wished you could have written more, showed him that you weren't pushing him away, but you had so little time, and you weren't the only one with people missing them back home.

The plane landed smoothly and you got off of the plane, Buddy trailing beside you. His head was held high and he was now looking at each person passing you, seemingly assessing their threat level. His bright red leash was held in one of your hands as you used both hands to push your wheelchair along.

Getting out of the airport was as simple as it could be in your situation. You made it outside and found your ride. She had on sunglasses and a baseball cap, and her bright red hair was pulled back into a ponytail. She was leaning against a large van and looking around for you. Her eyes finally landed on you, and she froze. A huge smile spread across her face and her hand slapped across her mouth. Her knees seemed to buckle slightly, as she bent over and leaned against the car again. You felt the tears pooling in your eyes, the invisible dam ready to burst open.
