Also, should I start letting you guys choose your pronouns? I'm getting a little on edge about always referring to the reader as she, but even if I put (She/He/They), I would have to say things like "(She/He/They) (is/are)," so what do you guys think about that? I want this to be inclusive, but not difficult to read.
"Whoa, look at that one!" A young boy exclaimed, thrusting his pointed finger towards one of the small planes surrounding you. You were currently visiting the Smithsonian Air and Space museum, where you had been many times and had researched quite a bit in the past. You had been invited by some acquaintances who had an extra ticket and knew that you enjoyed it, and you had recently entered into the Early Flight exhibit. You grinned and nodded in agreement.
"That's the Wright Military Flyer. It was built in 1909 and it was actually the world's first military aircraft. It was first entered into the Smithsonian in 1911," you informed the group, speaking off of your prior knowledge. The child giggled in excitement and jumped up and down.
"Cool!" He squealed. Someone from behind you scoffed.
"She keeps spewing out all this unnecessary information..." The girl behind you muttered. You turned and looked at her as she crossed her arms over her chest haughtily. You rolled your eyes.
"You're at a museum and you're complaining about learning?" You asked in disbelief. She just scoffed again and walked over to another item.
You all looked around for a few more minutes before you spoke up again. "You know, the ribbon cutting for this museum in 1976 was actually done with a robotic arm that was controlled by a signal from the Viking 1 when it was in orbit around Mars. It sent the signal to NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab, which passed it to here in Washington, DC, where the mechanical arm received it and cut the ribbon," you commented in passing, finding the fact interesting and worth while. Again, the same girl groaned.
"Can someone just shut her up already?" She whined loudly. You looked back at her as she was throwing her hands in the air in exasperation. You furrowed your eyebrows and frowned, a bit hurt that the facts that you thought were cool and exciting were annoying to your group. Your gaze locked momentarily with a particular leather jacket clad man behind your group, and he tilted his head a bit at you. Though his face was mostly covered by a large pair of pitch black sunglasses, you could see his eyebrows knitting together just as your were.
"Sorry," you muttered quietly, turning back around and hanging your head low as you walked to the next exhibit. Your group fell silent for a while longer as you looked at another exhibit. You stayed silent as well.
"Isn't it weird to think that this isn't even everything that they have? Like, there's a ton of stuff that they just hide from us. We don't even get to see it," one of the older boys in the group mused, stuffing his hands in his pockets. Everyone nodded and hummed in agreement.
Your previous run-ins with spewing out facts completely slipped your mind as you jumped at this boy's interest. Your head perked up and you smiled. "Yeah. There's actually a bit moving sculpture of what looks like a weird spaceship back in storage. It was an art piece created by a man named Rowland Emett, and it was a popular piece until it started a fire during a power mishap. It's been in storage ever since."
"You know what? No, I'm sick of this. We invited you to come with us because we wanted to be nice and now you're ruining the fun for everyone else! Why don't you just leave us alone and go somewhere else? We don't need you breathing down our necks and spitting out stupid facts that we don't need to know!" The girl shouted, shoving you to the side by your shoulder. You gasped and stumbled to the side, not expecting to be legitimately shoved because of your knowledge.
