Bucky Barnes x Bree
Requested by @thegirlwhoswriting! This one is a mixture of fluff and angst kinda, so I'm really sorry if the mood isn't steady. I'm always awful with mood. Enjoy!
Red-rimmed eyes flooded with tears gazed down at you and a desperate hand clutched at your own. Bucky's lip quivered slightly as he took in a deep breath. He couldn't believe his eyes. He couldn't believe any of this. How could he have been so careless? How could he leave you on your own on such a dangerous mission? He never should have agreed to split up. Perhaps if he had been there with you, you wouldn't be in such a miserable state.
It had been two weeks thus far, and the doctors weren't sure when - or if - you were going to wake up. You received frequent visitors in the form of the Avengers and friends. Even Wade Wilson had paid you a visit recently, much to Bucky's annoyance. For now, though, it was just the two of you. Bucky refused to leave your side until you came back to him. He wanted to be the first person you saw when you woke up. If he did have to leave, he wanted it to be for good reason.
It was truly taking a toll on him, the waiting. A lack of sleep was causing the formation of dark bags under his puffy eyes. He was weak and shaky as a result of too little nourishment. He had showered, but they were quick and he left his hair to dry and tangle however it happened to turn out. His facial hair was scruffier than usual, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been had Steve not shown up and forced him to start taking better care of himself.
"You know," he began, his voice cracking with emotion, "I wish it was me laying on that bed. I would gladly take your place if it meant you got to be safe." He paused to let out a chuckle before continuing. "I know you'd throttle me for saying this if you could. Say, could you do that for me? Just get up Bree and let me have it for saying I wish I was in a coma. Please?"
He fell silent as he stared down at your hand in his. His thumb traced lightly over the back of your hand and he sniffled a bit. He found that it was quite comforting to talk to you. It made him feel less alone, and it helped to cover up the constant beeping of the heart rate monitor. Nothing would ever beat the comfort he found from the sound of your voice, though. He was yearning to hear your laugh again, and just the thought of that had him tearing up again.
He bowed his head and squeezed his eyes shut, allowing his tears to drop onto the cold ceramic floors. Bucky kept his eyes closed and focused on his other senses instead for a moment to ground himself into reality.
The stinging scent of various cleaning products assaulted his nose and the trademark smell of a hospital was quite overbearing. Underneath all of that, though, was the faint scent of your perfume still lingering on your skin. He could hear the ticking of the clock on the wall and the muffled conversation of the two doctors standing on the other side of the wall of your hospital room. The cold air nipped at his skin, sending goosebumps down his arms and a shiver through his body.
"This place is like a prison," he muttered, slight annoyance seeping into his tone. His eyes fluttered open and their gaze landed on you once again. "All the lights are so bright, the sounds are so loud, the colors are so bland. Everything is so uniform. How do people stand this for so long?" Bucky questioned as he swept his eyes over the walls surrounding him. "I say we should spruce this place up a bit, huh?"
A grin spread across his face at the thought. He knew it would be the perfect way to get his mind off of the current situation, but what would he do? How would he decorate your room in a way that would be fun yet still safe and acceptable? That's when he got it.
It was no question that Bucky had quite the crush on you. Everyone on the team seemed to know except you. Tony would often try different stunts to force the two of you into awkward situations together, but Bucky had never taken that extra step and done something about his feelings. The only thing he had ever done was think about how he would ask you out and where he would take you. He found that it calmed him down whenever things got too overwhelming and his HYDRA memories stood out more than anything else. You anchored him in place, and now all his little daydreams were going to help calm him down one more time. If he couldn't be outside staring up at the stars with you for real, then he would bring the stars to you.
