Requested by @crystaliaamaquelin , hope this is okay! This is a soulmate AU, and I have explained how it works within the oneshot itself. The Sokovia Accords never existed here, by the way. Enjoy!

//TW : blood, violence//

You always swore that you had the clumsiest soulmate in the world.

Your body was littered with countless scars and battle wounds of your own, but in a world where your soulmate's scars appear on your own body, you had gained more than your fair share. Surely your own soulmate must be thinking the same thing as you each time they gain a new bullet wound shaped scar or a series of odd claw marks on their side. Perhaps one day you could meet up with them and explain that scars were a part of your job description as a friend to the Avengers.

You weren't an Avenger yourself, per se. You much preferred the ability to dictate when and where you would fight rather than allowing some big wig director to command your every move. You just liked to hang around with the team and pick up some slack when they needed the help. That was how you ended up at the Avengers Tower each and every day, usually just lounging around on the couches or training with someone from the team. Nine times out of ten, this "someone from the team" was the infamous Steve Rogers.

"Come on, (Y/L/N)! Are you even trying?" Steve teased playfully as he dodged your flying fist. You chuckled and brought your fists back up in front of your face defensively.

"Well, you know, I just wanted to give you a chance!" You shot back with a smirk. Steve laughed and swung his leg out towards your head, but you were quick to duck out of the way and swipe your own leg underneath the super soldier, knocking him off balance so he fell to the mat with a thud.

You stood back up and straightened out your t-shirt with a cocky grin. "Are you even trying, Rogers?" You mocked him, prepared to walk off in victory after your brawl. Steve, however, had different plans. His hand shot out and grabbed onto your ankle as he yanked your leg out from underneath you. You let out a surprised yelp as you fell to the mat beside him, the force of the fall knocking the wind out of you.

"A bit cocky, are we?"

"Shut it, Rogers."

The sound of the training room door opening and closing caused both of your heads to perk up so you could see your visitor. You suppressed a groan at the sight of the metal armed super soldier making his way into the room. You let your head fall back onto the mat as Steve stood up to greet his best friend.

"Bucky! Glad you made it. I was just showing (Y/N) here why you shouldn't get cocky during a fight," he joked, flashing you a grin. You laughed and finally stood up to exit the ring.

"Whatever, Capsicle."

"You're just jealous because I won."

"You won because you cheated!"

"It's not cheating if your opponent gets cocky."

Quietly, almost too quiet for you to hear properly, Bucky muttered, "I had no idea (Y/N) had anything to be cocky about."

You saw Steve's eyes widen with surprise, and you knew that he was praying that you hadn't heard what Bucky had just said. Not wanting to make Steve feel bad about his friend's behavior, you flashed a fake bright smile, as if you hadn't heard a thing.

"Well, I'll see you around, alright? Bye Steve! Bye Bucky!" You called over your shoulder as you made your way out the door. Steve waved goodbye to you, while Bucky just grunted in annoyance.

As soon as the door closed, you let out a saddened sigh. Your shoulders slumped in defeat. You had no idea why Bucky seemed to hate you so much. You had been nothing but kind to him ever since he arrived at the tower, but he didn't seem to care. The disdain in his eyes whenever he looked at you was clear as day, and you couldn't help but feel self conscious each time he fixed a pointed glare on you. You knew you shouldn't take it too much to heart since you had done nothing to upset him, but it wasn't as easy as it sounded to ignore someone who hates your guts. It's especially difficult when that person happens to be the best friend of one of your closest friends.
