“I wanna go on the slide first, then the swing oh and the monkey bars,” she said excitedly. I laughed a bit, she was always so full of energy. I missed being a kid.
“We can do all of that,” I told her walking a little faster and grabbed her hand.
It didn’t take us long to get to the park. There weren’t many other kids there but I noted the presence of a group of kids my age. I’d have to make sure Emma stays away from them, she loves making friends and that didn’t always turn out to be a good thing.
“Come Jenn, come,” she urged me over to the swing. I smiled at her and got behind the swing she sat on and pushed her. “higher,” she chanted. I pushed her higher and higher smiling more as she laughed. Life was so simple when you’re young I wish it could be like that all the time.
She soon settled down after a few activities and she found her way to the sand box. I took a seat on the bench nearby and pulled out my phone to see if I got any texts but there was nothing.
“Well hello there love,” a familiar voice came. I snapped my head up to see Louis to my surprise standing over me.
“Louis, hi,” I said nervously. I really didn’t know how to feel about him. I didn’t know if he was nice or if it was all just tricks.
“What are you doing here?” he asked as he took a seat. I shrugged looking at him. He wore his usual dark beanie with blue jeans and white cut off shirt.
“Just here with my sister,” I said motioning my head to wear she sat playing in the sand. He nodded with a small smile.
“How old is she?” he asked curiously.
“7,” I stated and nibbled on my lip eyeing him carefully. He smiled a bit more.
“I have two twin sisters about her age, plus one who is 11 and anther that’s 13,” he told me casually. I eyed him for a moment.
“Wow 4 sisters,” I said. He smiled a bit with a shrug. “Why didn't you bring them to the park?” I asked. He looked at me and shoved his hands in my pockets.
“Mom doesn’t trust me, She thinks I’m too irresponsible. Like I would actually let something happen to them, they’re my sisters,” he said sounding agitated. I nodded slowly.
“Do you come here often?” I asked. He shrugged pulling his hands out of his pockets and leaned them back on the bench behind him.
“On occasion, why are you going to start looking for me?” he asked flashing me a smirk. I rolled my eyes huffing a bit.
“And of course you would have to ruin the conversation by being a cocky self obsorbed jerk,” I said with a sigh.
“Come now love that wasn’t nice,” he said leaning towards me. I looked back at him with an unkind stare.
“Would you stop calling me love please?” I asked feeling increasingly annoyed. He smirked a bit.
“I could but then what else would I call you? Babe maybe, or I could go with beautiful, or sexy,” he commented. I sighed deeply again.
“I’m done talking to you, you can go now,” I said crossing my arms.
“I’m just teasing Jenn, you need to learn to stop being so uptight,” he said. I gave him a ‘yea right’ look which only made him chuckle a bit and smile. I shook my head with a small one back then looked to see if my sister was alright.
Fear went through me. She wasn’t in the sand box where I’d last seen her.
“Where’d my sister go?” I asked alarmed as I stood up. My eyes quickly scanned the park.
“Over there,” Louis said standing beside me and pointing off in a distance. I squinted to see and quickly found Emma talking to those kids I noted when we first got here.
“Shit,” I said and sprinted off towards her. My heart raced as one of the guys bent down towards her. She of course had a giant smile on her face but only because she was so young and niave. “Emma,” I snapped and picked her.
“Jenn I made friends,” she said pointing at the 3 guys. I glared at them all as I held her close to me.
“Don’t ever do that again, you scared me. You know you’re not allowed to talk to strangers,” I scolded her.
“Relax we didn’t hurt her,” the one who bent down to her. I glared at him.
“You guys better get out of here before I call the cops,” I snapped at him. The three of them laughed.
“Big talk from a small girl,” a guy behind the first one said.
“I’m serious for all I know you guys could have kidnapped her,” I said angrily.
“We’d rather take you than her, you look more fun,” the 3rd one teased. My eyes went red with hatred.
“That’s enough why don’t you guys beat it,” Louis’ voice came from behind us. I didn’t know he was still here. I thought he would have just gone off to do his own thing but here he was defending me.
“Oh how intimidating, a 5 year old a chick and a whimpy punk,” the first guy taunted.
“I’m 7 not 5,” Emma said innocently.
“Emma quiet, mom is going to hear about this you know better,” I told her trying to stay tough but inside all I wanted was to leave and run home. The 3 guys laughed. Louis took a step towards them his fist balled up tightly.
“Get lost now,” he barked.
“Louis forget it, they aren’t worth it,” I told him quietly. I didn’t want Louis getting hurt even though I had a feeling he was tough enough to try to take them, three on one is still a big disadvantage.
“Yea dude do what your girlfriend tells you to,” one of them taunted.
“Shut it,” Louis snapped glaring at them. He turned his body to me keeping a glare on the 3 guys. “Go back home,” he instructed. I looked at him confused before glancing at the 3 guys.
“But Louis,” I started but he quickly cut me off.
“Go,” he snapped glaring at me making me jump a little. I nodded holding Emma tighter to my body and quickly walked away from the situation without looking back.
