I let go on his hand as we entered the kitchen that was a straight walk from the door.

Both my parents sat at our rectangular table. My dad sat at the head of the table farthest from us and my mom stood behind him. I gulped a bit as they gave a surprised expression to Louis.

“Who’s your friend Jenn?” my mom asked curiously. I looked up at Louis.

“This is Louis, a friend from school,” I told them.

“Well unfortunately we’re going to have to ask your friend to leave because we need to have a serious talk,” my dad said seriously.

“Actually that’s why he’s here,” I said. They both exchanged confused glances then looked back at me. I placed my hands on the chair I was closest too and took a deep breath. “I’m assuming you got a call from the school today,” I said.

“Yes and very interesting call. Honestly what is the matter with you, how could you be so stupid?” my dad snapped at me. I dropped my head.

“Now dear it looks like she has something to say so let her talk,” my mom said rubbing his shoulder. My dad sighed deep and motioned for me to talk.

“It-it w-wasn’t my fault,” I managed to choke out nervously. My dad rolled his eyes.

“Oh please Jennifer don’t give me that. You were caught with drugs end of story so be a big girl and take some responsibility for it,” my dad snapped at me making me drop my head more. I was seriously regretting ever going to talk to Louis today.

“Sir if I may interject. It really wasn’t Jenn’s fault. The joint she was found with was mine,” Louis confessed. I looked up to see my mom cover’s her opened mouth with her hand and my dad glaring at him.

“Where you offering drugs to my daughter?” he snapped angrily causing Louis to flinch a bit.

“Dad,” I spoke up trying to reason with him.

“What? Don’t tell me you’re going to stick up for this little punk,” my dad snapped again. My heart broke but Louis didn’t flinch a bit on that one.

“Henry,” my mom said disappointed with his words.

“Dad listen this is what happened. I walk talking to Louis during lunch and he did start smoking in front of me but I took it out of my hand and put it out and told him it was bad but that’s when a teacher showed up,” I explained.

“It’s true sir. I didn’t force her to try it or anything. I took like two drags and she took it from me and scolded me for it,” Louis spoke up and explained.

“So it’s your fault she’s stuck in detention now for a week?” my dad asked.

“Why didn’t you admit it was yours?” my mom asked calmly.

“I dunno. I guess I was being selfish,” he said and dropped his head a bit.

“He would have gotten expelled, I covered for him because they would have gone easier on me,” I explained. My dad shook his head in disappointment.

“And you just let her get into trouble for you mistake? What kind of man doesn’t own up to his mistakes,” my dad shot bitterly at Louis.

“I apologize for putting her in the situation she’s in but I came here so that you wouldn’t be mad at her, she didn’t do anything wrong except choose to hang out with me,” Louis said dropping his head a bit. I looked at him with a frown. Sure this is a screwed up situation but I didn’t regret getting to know him.

“Well thank you for being honest with us, it couldn’t have been easy,” my mom said kindly. She was always more understanding than my dad.

“To make sure this doesn’t happen to my daughter again. I refuse you from going near her you hear me?” my dad snapped again.

            “But dad,” I started.

“No daughter of mine is going to get mixed in with a delinquent you understand me,” my dad yelled. We both kept quiet not wanting to push my dad further. “No you get out of my site,” he said pointing at Louis. Louis nodded slowly and left my house.

I quickly chased after him shutting the front door behind me.

“Louis wait,” I said. He stopped at the bottom step to my house and looked up at him. “Are you okay?” I asked. He gave me a small smile.

“Nothing I can’t handle,” he told me. I nodded slowly.

“I’m really sorry about my dad,” I said. He shrugged.

“I’m sure I would have done the same if I had a daughter who was cover drugs from a punk kid,” he explained. I frowned a bit. “I’ll see you Friday, pick you up at 8,” he said with a wave and walked off. I watched him leave playing back the talk with my parents. How could he still want to hang out with me after seeing how cruel my dad could be?

It was weird but I was actually a little excited for his party on Friday. I would just have to think of something to tell my parents.
