“What are you kids doing?” he snapped at us.

“Nothing sir we’re just talking,” Louis explained. The teacher rolled his eyes and looked at me.

“Then what’s that?” he asked pointing at the joint in my hand. I bit my lip nervously. “Hand it over,” he said putting out his hand. My nervous shaking hands placed the joint in his. He sniffed it and a dark serious glare came over his face. “Weed? Mr Tomlinson I should have guess you’d be up to no good. I’m afraid this is completely unacceptable. I’m reporting you to the principal and serious measures will be put in order,” he threatened Louis making him drop his head. “And shame on you for pressuring this girl to try it too,” he said. I bit my lip nervous as Louis’ head dropped more. He was being expelled I know it.

“Actually sir, it-it was mine,” I covered. The teacher looked at me in surprise.

            “Excuse me?” he asked.

“The joint, is mine, it was in my hand, I made it this morning and I was offering it to Louis,” I explained.

“What’s your name?” he asked me eyeing me.

“Jennifer Brooks,” I said. He looked at me thoughtful.

“Miss Brooks, you’ve never so much as stepped out of line the entire time you’ve been at this school,” he said. I shrugged.

“Had a detention last week for skipping,” I told him. I felt Louis’ eyes on me and I knew he was as confused as I was. I didn’t know what made me cover for him. Maybe I secret didn’t want him to be kicked out of school, whatever the reason I was stuck with the blame now.

“I’m surprised at you Miss Brooks,” he said shaking his head. I shrugged.

“It’s always the quiet ones right?” I asked offering a little bit of sarcastic humor. He sighed deeply.

“Well Miss Brooks I believe I’m still going to have to punish you. A weeks worth of detention starting tonight and Mr Tomlinson you will join her for tonight for being part of this whole situation,” he said. We both nodded our heads and he took off.

I watched him leave not wanting to face Louis’ questioning stares.

“You didn’t have to do that,” he said in a low tone.

“You’re welcome,” I said quietly and looked at him for a brief moment then turned and walked away back into the school.

What was going on with me? Detention for the rest of this week and part of next week ? I seriously needed to get my priorities straight. I was a good student and I was letting Louis change that and for what? So I could see him again tomorrow. Why was I so hooked on this trouble maker? I needed to stop but I knew that part of me really didn’t want to.

Amanda was completely shocked when I explained what happened and even she was disappointed in me but nothing was going to compare to what my parents might do when they find out.

As I walked to the detention room I never thought that detention might sound better than going home.

I sighed sitting down and took my spot in one of the desk in the back. It wasn’t long till Louis came in. I didn’t look at him as he made his way to the desk beside me and I fixated my stare on my hands as he turned around to face me.

“Why did you do it?” he asked me quietly. I ignored him and sighed deeply. “I’ve been racking my brain all afternoon trying to figure out why you of all people would cover me and I just don’t get it,” he went on. I shrugged briefly looking at him then looked back down.

“I’ve been wondering the same thing,” I said quietly. He kept looking at me and I soon looked back up at him. His eyes were still looking for answers. I shrugged my shoulders again as I shoved my hands in my pockets. “I don’t know I guess it annoyed me how he automatically blamed you. I mean the joint was in my hand but he still blamed you. It just got me wondering how many times you might have been blamed for something you didn’t do,” I explained to him.

“But it was mine,” he stated.

“I know that but it was still in my hand, if no one knew either of us I’d be blamed but because he knows your history he assumed it was you. I didn’t like that,” I said looking down.

“Geez Jenn you sound like you actually care,” he said with a small smile. I rolled my eyes sighing before I looked back at him.

“You said yourself you didn’t want to get expelled. I just helped. Now we’re even for the time you stuck up for me at the park,” I told him.

“I dunno, I did get punched pretty hard in the face,” he stated smirking.

“You said it was no big deal,” I stated back.

            “It wasn’t,”

“So then we’re even,” I pointed out. He sighed smiling a bit at me and nodded.

“Thanks,” he said. I shrugged it off and sighed seeing the teachers come in. Louis and I were the only ones in detention today, which made it kind of boring because I like seeing people walk out. Might even be a fun idea to bet on who would leave first...
