I made the small walk around to the door to find the place had the curtains drew. No light was getting in or out of the windows. I pulled the door gently to hear the ding of the bell above it. Looking around the place had been covered in red velvet and silk, it looked like something from a cheesy romance movie.
Standing beside my table was Caleb. He was wearing a black suit with a red dress shirt that matched the interior of the café. He held up his hands in surrender as I turned for the door. "Hey, this wasn't my doing. You know what the girls are like." That was true. Padre's girls love anything to do with romance and aren't afraid to go over the top. "Fine. What did you want me for?" I said as I took a few steps towards the table, casually sniffing the air.
All I could pick up was Caleb's scent, spaghetti and meatballs. "I wanted to make up for my actions at school earlier. So I cooked dinner, I hope you're hungry." I thought back to the deer earlier. "I'm starving."
I sat in my normal seat and waited as Caleb brought out a huge plate of spaghetti accompanied by two small side plates. At first we ate in silence before Caleb kept glancing behind him. "Something wrong?" He twisted his head back around to face me. "No nothing, just checking the time. Won't your father be wondering where you are?" I shook my head and shovelled more food into my mouth to prevent me from having to talk about it.
It didn't work. "Is something wrong between you and him?" I huffed out a breath. "Well I went through some changes recently and it has really put a strain on all of my relationships, especially with Stef and my dad. He got annoyed at me earlier and I had to sneak out." He looked like he wanted to ask more, like he was genuinely interested in me. "So I'm left feeling isolated. Sorry, but it feels better to say that." He smiled slightly and took my hand. "Its no problem, sometimes you need to talk to people about things."
I was so wrapped up in the moment that I leaned in closer and forgot I had heard the door open. I wasn't aware of anyone there until a fist hit Caleb in the face. I jumped up to see Stef looking back at me with betrayal in his eyes. "I knew you would cheat on me with him." I opened my mouth to speak but he held up his hand to stop me before throwing open the door.
I ran to the door to see him quickly walk around the corner on the far side of the street. "Stef! It isn't what it looks like!" My attempts were no use. Tears pricked into my eyes as I shrank down the door frame and curled myself into a ball. I attempted to compose myself as I heard Caleb get up from the floor and look around the café for me.
"Are you alright?" I stared at him for a moment before shaking my head. He pulled me off the ground. "Come on. We need to get you out of here. I'll drive." I wiped my eyes as he pushed his car keys into the car's door. "Wait, where are we going?" I stopped just outside the door and watched him turn to face me slowly. "Anywhere."
After a twenty minute drive we arrived at a cliff that over looked all of Belfast, it was beautiful at night. I glanced over at Caleb seemed to just stare at me. "I promise I didn't know he was going to show up earlier. Otherwise I wouldn't have asked you to join me." I looked away from Belfast. "It's not your fault. We've been fighting more and more recently. I have a lot of patience, and I did love him at one point, but I think its right to end things." "If you love him, why end it?"
"Because I don't anymore and because I still can't risk him getting hurt." "Well what about me?" I was taken back at his question. "I'm not sure right now. I mean, I'd need to spend more time with you to see." He nodded before smiling at me. "Alright then, take one last look for tonight. I'm going to take you home."
We arrived back at my house just after midnight. Caleb cut the engine and sat in the car for a few seconds before I turned for the door. "Hey. Despite getting punched in the face and that, I had a good time tonight." I smiled back. "Me too." He leaned closer to me and for some reason I was drawn closer to him as well. We were so close to kissing when the light flashed on, causing us to jump. I looked out my window to see a furious dad. I looked back to Caleb to whisper. "I'll see you at school tomorrow." I took a deep breath and left the car.
