Breaking and entering

I sat in the front with Caleb on the ride to Stef's house. He wouldn't take his eyes off Stef, who wouldn't take his glare off me. I could feel it burning into the side of my head. Speeding down the motorway was no problem but the small city roads were the problem, we were stopped for longer periods at a time and Stef was beginning to think of questions.

"When did you become... what you are?" I sighed. "I'll tell you everything when we get to your house. The car isn't the best place for this." He sat back and kept himself at bay. We were a few small streets away from his house and Stef began to search his pockets with vigor. "Oh god. I can't find my keys." Stef's parents had gone out of town for a few days and left him with the place to himself.

"That's fine. I can let you in." We got out of the car and I searched for an open window. The top window to the attic was partially open and barely sitting on the ledge, if a strong enough wind came along it would close. "Give me two minutes." I moved into the small ginnel at the side of the house and began to climb up the vines that wrapped around most of the house's side.

When I reached the attic I gently reached out and opened the window wide. I could have just jumped up but I didn't want to creep Stef out or cause it to close itself. Inside the attic was how I remember it from hiding up here when my dad came to take me home as a child. The boxes of old toys and furniture were carefully piled against the walls, they left a small hole where the door the rest of the house stayed.

The walkway at the bottom of the attic stairs led out to the landing, next to the bedrooms. Pictures of Stef and his family were hung perfectly with exact spacing between them, showing Stef's dad has a major OCD problem. I snapped into focus and hopped over the railing at the top of the stairs. At the last second I bent my knees and absorbed the impact. I let the guys in through the front door.
