The small café was buzzing with life, even at half ten in the morning. We parked the car across the road and looked in at our empty table, beside the window. Belfast seemed to be alive as the cars and pedestrians sped on their way. I looked through the window and thought of all the good times we had shared, when one of the chairs pulled out... and the new guy from school sat down.
Stef's mouth dropped open before he shut it with force, gritting his teeth a we walked into our favourite café. His anger turned to disgust as the new guy rose from his seat when he saw me. "Knew you'd come looking for me, didn't know you'd bring your friend." His tone was friendly but guarded because of Stef. Stef took advantage of the fact that he had stood up as he slid into the chair and motioned for me to move past the new guy and join him. I smiled as I walked towards the table.
The new guy shrugged and turned to walk into the back, calling over his shoulder. "The name's Caleb, by the way." Caleb strolled into the staffroom of the café. The sound of the door shutting echoed in my ears as Stef watched me with a lot of suspicion. "Why is he here?" Stef began questioning me; he got paranoid when he was jealous. "He said he worked here when we were in school, but that doesn't matter because it was your idea to come here." "What did you actually say to him earlier?" I sighed and rolled my eyes. "I told you, I said I would punch him in the dick." Stef leaned back in his chair and studied me.
"You guys ready to order?" The waitress had changed over shifts to this new girl since we had last been in this morning. "No thanks, my free period is almost up. I should get back to school." Stef stood up from the table and made his way to the door. I headed out to the reventon with the keys in one hand and my phone in the other. Even with my vampire precision and abilities I fumbled to get the keys into the door. Sliding in, I wasn't sure if I wanted to kill or cry.
The drive home was a lengthy process but as soon as I left the main streets of Belfast I pressed the accelerator to the floor and weaved through the cars until I reached the entrance to my driveway. My dad stood in the garage waiting for me with his hands behind his back, his expression mixed between anger, fear and confusion. "Kathy, I got a call from your head teacher, apparently you left school today."
'Is he really choosing now to take an interest in my education?' In the months since mum had died all he had cared about was work. "Yeah I got sick so I had to come home." He shook his head. "Stop lying to me Katherine." He brought his hands to his sides, revealing a blood bag. He looked between me and the bag. "Why am I finding blood bags in the garage?" He gestured towards the small pile that I normally kept in the roof. I bit my tongue to stop me from lunging for the bags.
"I don't know where they came from. But I know they aren't mine." Lying had become second nature to me. My phone buzzed in my pocket, I flipped it out and looked at the message. 'Hey, I know we got off to a bad start but swing by the café and I'll make it up to you.' Ugh, I don't know about Caleb. I flipped my phone down and shoved it deep into my pocket. "Who is that?" Dad set the blood bag onto the counter top and folded his arms over his chest. "It's someone from school, I have to go." Dad used to be in the military so the second I heard his drill voice I knew there was no arguing. "You are going nowhere, young lady, apart from your rom." I rolled my eyes and marched past him, up stairs and into my room.
I locked the door and opened the window. If Caleb really wanted to 'make things up to me' then he can start by fixing things between me and Stef. I looked back at my room as I stepped out the window and closed it before launching myself from the roof and into the tree line surrounding my house. Running was a freeing change from driving everywhere. If I was going to be in control of myself them I needed to hunt first.
There was a river that ran through my family's property which was a popular drinking spot for deer, I walked along the water until I found a suitable sized deer. The long antlers and large build made it easy to spot as I began to creep through the trees. The anticipation was killing me as the stag raised his neck and I struck.
The sweet taste of it's blood really hit the spot, my thirst shrivelled away leaving nothing but bliss. I tore myself away in time for it to get up and run for it's life. Looking down at myself in the water, I had only managed to get blood on my face and jacket. I removed my jacket and wiped my face on it before placing it in the river and hung it out to dry on a near tree.
It was getting dark so I flew through the forest on the way to Padres. Arriving at the city's edge I took to the rooftops and ran along there until I dropped into the alley beside Padres. 'Let's go and see what he wants.' I thought to myself as I rounded the corner to open the door.
