The force of our landing caused the ground under us to sink slightly. A million questions raced through my head. Did we really escape? Will Jensen leave us alone? Will Caleb be alright? What about Elijah? Once again we were in the forest, about a mile from Jensen's castle, but not quite on the run. "What's the game plan then?"
Elijah helped Caleb over to a rock before coming back to talk to me. "Knowing Jensen as long as I gave us the advantage, but when he wants revenge he doesn't care who gets hurt. Not even his 'mate'." The low growls of hunting werewolves came from less than a hundred meters away, it wouldn't take them long to find us, as the sun moved across the sky.
We each grabbed one of Caleb's arms and dragged him through the trees at vamp speed, but the werewolves were faster. They clipped at our ankles as we ran. An old windmill came into our view as we tried to escape. We barely made it to safety when the five red eyed wolves crashed into the door.
From the window upstairs we observed them, Elijah's eyebrows arched together over his eyes. "That is unusual." My curiosity spiked. "What is?" "Jensen never sends out less than double the amount of werewolves as their prey. So why are there only five?" My heart sank as a growl crept out of the shadows behind us.
The red eyes zeroed in on me as it arched it's back and prepared to strike, aiming straight for my face. Fear washed over me as my arms wrapped around my head. My eyes were jolted open when a thud hit the wooden floor beneath us. The noise that followed was like a dog shaking a chew toy mixed with Elijah's scream.
When the wolf backed away blood dropped from its muzzle, leaving a trail as it crossed the space, forcing me to back into the wall. The growling outside was now silent, the door flew open causing both heads to spin and see Stef shaking with rage in the doorway. The wolf lunged, sinking its teeth deep into my torso before Stef knocked into it and began fighting. "Caleb! Help them."
Caleb's head snapped up and back into action; he threw himself across the room and took off the white t-shirt he was wearing to use as a compress to hold in the blood. "Hold that there. " He demanded before moving to look at Elijah. There was a faint breath of an exchange between them. "Heal her Cal. Don't waste your life healing me." "If I heal her then I can't heal you. I don't want to loose either of you."
A deep pain rushed through my veins, starting from my stomach and working its way around my body. "I know you don't but be happy with her, the venom from the werewolf bite is in her system, she doesn't have long. I'll go back to dad, who knows I might get sent back again." He laughed as his breathing slowed and finally stopped.
Caleb wasted no time sprinting back to me. He laid his hands over my wound and leaned close to my ear. "This is the only way to heal you." His whisper was pained as a sharp light beamed from his hands. The pain of the bite eased and the venom retracted through my circulatory system. Seconds later Caleb rolled over onto his back and whispered. "No more angel mojo, I'm just a human now.
I was completely healed, however now Caleb's angel powers were gone he didn't have the angelic healing, I could hear his heartbeat becoming erratic. "No! I won't let you die!" I bit my wrist and pressed the bloody wound to his mouth, forcing him to drink as he protested. "Please Kathy, no. I don't want to be a vampire."
Tears streamed down my face. "But it's the only way to save you. You healed me now let me do the same for you!" He continued. "I- You- Uh- Ah... okay. I'll do this for us." He closed his eyes as I bent down to kiss him one more time. When I pulled back he kept his eyes closed. "I love you Kathy." With a swift flick of my wrist I snapped his neck. "I love you too."
My heart felt as if it had just fallen out of my chest as I cried over his lifeless body. Not sure how much time had passed but a thick woven blanket had been wrapped around my shoulders. Stef lifted me off Caleb and held me, just letting me cry. The sun began to set as I wiped my eyes. "We can't let him wake up here. He needs to be somewhere safe and familiar." Stef took the blanket and draped it over the body before picking him up and handing him to me. "I'll carry Elijah." "Okay, we can take them to my house; it's only a couple of hours away by car. If we run we can beat the sunset."
Reaching our top speeds we made it to the house as I expected. Entering through my room we laid Caleb on the bed and Elijah on the floor before picking up the bedroom door and barricading it off. "He won't be out much longer, a few minutes if even that." We sat, my eyes never leaving Caleb and Stef's never leaving me. A slight twitch of his eyelids sent me bolting to his side to grab his hand, before they shot open.
Pitch black...
