I sat for an hour while my dad shouted, causing granny to wake up and come down. Then they started arguing and I slipped out the door and leapt up to the window of my bedroom. I snuggled into my bed and shut the world out. Normally I would think about how me and Stef were doing but tonight Caleb crept into my mind.
The next morning I was woken by the smell of blood. I unlocked my door and followed the smell through the halls, all the way to the kitchen where dad held a knife. "Oww! Son of a... Damn knife." He placed it back on the chopping board and ran his finger under the tap, causing the water to run red.
I turned and doubled out of the door before he could see me. I looked at my face in the car door, my eyes were black and my fangs had come down into place. I lifted my hand to my mouth and bit into it. The taste of vampire blood is repulsive which caused everything to go back to normal. I threw myself into the car while my hand healed and went speeding on the way to school.
I pulled up near the door. A few cars down I spotted Stef staring at me. I looked at him apologetically before walking up to him. "Hey Stef. Look, we need to talk." "Sure, is it about your date last night? Or the fact that you're cheating on me?" I took a deep breath. "I'm sorry that is how you see it but it wasn't a date. And I would never cheat on you. But I feel like lately we haven't been working and I need some space to think about things. So I'm sorry but I think we should break up."
I turned and walked away before I could hear his reaction. The next thing I knew I walked right into someone. "Hey, watch where you're goin- oh Kathy, sorry I didn't see you there. Are you okay?" I diverted my path to my first class. "Not really, I just broke up with Stef." "It's alright, stay with me for a bit." We walked to class as we talked about some random stuff.
Normally in science I revelled in the one class I had with Stef, sitting at the front and staring at him. Of course, he stared back as well. However when we got into class Caleb pulled me to the back of the room and sat next to me. We were the first two through the door. The last person was Stef. He looked at our normal seats with genuine shock that I wasn't there.
As he walked towards the seats he glanced around the class, searching for me. When he spotted me at the back his face dropped, then he saw who I was sitting next to his expression turned to anger. He quickly sat down; however through the lesson he kept glancing back at Caleb and I, until the teacher barked at him in a gruff voice.
"Mr. Smith, do tell me what if Miss Price and Mr. Novark's table is more important than my lesson on gravity. Because if so then maybe it should be on your A level instead." After that Stef kept his head down and wrote notes, and I did the same.
As it turned out Caleb and I spent the whole day in the same classed, and each class we sat together and passed notes. 'So, how are you holding up?' His handwriting was strangely elegant for a guy. 'Well I haven't broken down in tears again, so I'd say I'm alright.' As the teacher came around I slid my arms onto the table to cover the page. When he walked away and sat down I placed my arms back down.
'Well then do you maybe want to go out sometime? I promise it won't be like last night.' 'I thought last night wasn't a date.' 'Yeah but it looked like one.' 'Let me think about it. Hide this.' Caleb read my words carefully before casually crumpling the paper and putting it into the pocket of my pink and white hoodie.
As I'd known what was in store for today I dressed simple. A hoodie, t-shirt, jeans and my favourite pair of pink vans. My hair was up in a ponytail with just my fringe draping over my face. 'Hey' I mouthed at him in response to it; all I got back was a wink before we put our heads back down.
At lunch I decided I would do some work on my computer project that was dues tomorrow. I was about to excuse myself when I realised Caleb would probably have to do it as well. Rows filled with students on computers was what awaited us. I took a deep breath through my nose and my eyes snapped down three rows to see Stef, with his eyes glued to his monitor. I could read the small print, even from a few rows away. It read, 'supernatural reasons for mood change and distancing.' I gulped before I realised he couldn't come to an actual conclusion about what I am from that.
I calmed myself enough to finish my homework. The rest of school passed in a blur of talking and being ignored. The bell rang and we raced through the doors of the art department that led to the car park. "So, have you given any more thought to going out sometime?" I nodded at his confident, hopeful expression. "I have but not tonight, I'm grounded for the rest of the week after last night, remembers?" I took a step back and got into the Reventon. "Okay, text me tonight then." He winked as I drove away.
When I got home I was greeted by a cautious 'hello' from dad, and grandma was nowhere to be found. I told dad that I needed to use the laptop for homework tonight, but really used it to check the browser history for anything suspicious. It came up with all kinds of supernatural myths and stories. I excused myself to go to my room, claiming not to be hungry.
In my bedroom I grabbed my iPad and thought. I was trying to recall my last night as a human and all I could remember about my maker. Nothing really came to mind besides a name. Google quickly came up with over a million results on 'Jared Smith' so I switched to images to try and jog my brain. None of the images looked familiar do I flipped on my spotify playlist and started to text Caleb. That was pretty much the rest of my night.
