Chapter 39: Love and Police

(a/n) Thanks for the kind messages, they really meant a lot. I'm definitely going to try to keep writing for you guys since you're so awesome. :)

P.S. Reasons why I don't trust Twitter: you never know when you might accidentally make friends with famous Wattpaders and then fangirl when you find out

P.P.S. HAPPY VALENTINES DAY, MY LOVELIES!! <3

"What should we do with her?" Ashton asked.

"I don't know," I replied. "Do we just keep her there?"

"Are you going to release her to let her shower and eat and stuff?" Michael asked me. "Like you did with us?"

"Probably not," I said with a shrug. "She deserves to suffer like you guys did."

"But we can't let her starve to death," Ashton reminded me. "We have to give her something."

"She can have a chicken nugget," Luke said. "That reminds me: I'm hungry."

"Can I send out this video?" Calum asked, re-watching Allison and I's cat fight. "This is hilarious. We could earn money off this thing."

"Focus!" I snapped at them. "In all seriousness, we have to head back to civilization to turn Allison in. I'll let you guys do that. I'll hide out here on the bus or something so the police don't catch me."

"I'm not sure if that's going to work," Ashton said uncertainly. "I feel like we're cheating death here."

"It's not death," Michael said in my defense. "It's imprisonment. I'm not letting my girlfriend go to jail for something that isn't her fault."

"But it is partly her fault," Calum spoke up. He glanced at me. "No offense, Reese."

"None taken," I mumbled, but that still stung a little.

"Look, let's just rationalize the plan," Ashton said. "Allison and Reese are both wanted by the federal police, and we're agreeing to turn Allison in. But Reese can't hide forever. What are we going to do?"

"Who says that I can't hide forever?" I demanded, but my heart quivered in my chest. "Maybe I can get plastic surgery or something so no one will recognize me."

"No," Michael protested. "You shouldn't waste your pretty face."

"We're running around in circles here," Calum sighed. "We can't avoid the inevitable. Reese has kidnapping charges held against her, possibly for the rest of her life, and there's nothing that we can do to help her."

"Well, of course not with an attitude like that," Michael grumbled. "Come on, think harder!"

"I can't think on an empty stomach," Luke said. "Can we eat first and think later?"

"Reese is your friend, guys!" my boyfriend cried, and I hated that he was speaking for me. "Why aren't you trying harder to protect her after all that she's done to protect you?"

The other boys looked guilty, and they all started talking over each other at once. With their loud Australian voices mingling together, I couldn't catch everything they said. But I knew that Ashton and Calum were right. I was a wanted woman, and I always would be for the rest of my life if I didn't get turned in. I didn't want to live my life in the shadows with my face cast down, always looking over my shoulder. That was no way to live.

I was grateful that these boys wanted to help me, especially since I had put them through heck and back, but it was time that I put their suffering to an end. They had a job to do, to perform for millions of fans around the world, and I didn't want to prevent that. They were my friends, and I only wanted what was best for them. I especially wanted my boyfriend to be happy, not tied down to a fugitive like me.
