Chapter 38: Breakups and Beat-Ups

(a/n) I love being in Luke's lane. What lane are you guys in?

P.S. If y'all don't get my strong message in this chapter, I will stop writing for good.

P.P.S. Sorry for the late chapters. I haven't been writing much lately because schoolwork, my job, and personal issues have been taking up a lot of my time. I want to keep writing, but I'm just not finding the motivation. I might take a little break from Wattpad after I finish this story, but I'm not sure yet. I'm really sorry, but I hope you enjoy the rest of the story.

"I guess it's okay now that we're in the Great Empty," I said, kicking dirt up with my feet. "We can go out in public without worrying about us getting caught."

"I wouldn't call this 'public'," Michael said, making quotation marks with his fingers.

We were walking around the bus, and it felt rather liberating to go outside without worrying about the police following in our footsteps. There was absolutely nothing out here, it was literally just us and the bus, so no one could track us down. At the same time, though, I worried about keeping a plentiful supply of food, drinks, toilet paper, and other necessities like that. There wasn't a grocery store or Walmart nearby to get everything we needed.

"What are we going to do, Reese?" Michael asked, kicking the dirt like I was.

I knew what he was talking about, and I sighed. "I don't know. But I'm working on it, don't worry."

He only hummed. "Let's stop thinking about depressing things and do something else."

"Like what?"

He bent down and gestured for me to climb on his back. I raised my eyebrows and hesitated for a second.

"Are you sure that I won't be too heavy?" I asked.

"Are you suggesting that I'm weak?" he demanded jokingly.

"You're not exactly the Hulk," I chuckled.

I hopped on anyway, like he was giving me a piggyback ride. He straightened up and held onto my legs. I didn't know what to do with my hands, and I felt rather unbalanced.

"Onward, my stallion!" I declared, pointing off into the distance.

Michael started running in that direction, and I squeaked and held onto his shoulders for dear life. This reminded me of the rollercoaster of death, and an unpleasant tingling shot through my limbs.

"My heart is like a stallion, they love it more when it's broken!" my boyfriend sang loudly.

"Do you wanna feel beautiful?" I joined in. "Do you wanna? Yeah!"

We looked utterly ridiculous, but I didn't care. I liked that we were acting like a couple of five-year olds, because it wasn't very often that we were allowed to do this. Not just because of Allison, but also because it wasn't the social norm. But I liked that Michael and I did our own thing without caring about what other people thought. It made us unique.

Michael suddenly stumbled, and I gasped and held onto him tighter. He regained his balance, but he was breathing hard. I got the message and slid off his back, landing on my feet on the ground.

"That was both strange and spontaneous," I said. "But in a good way. Are you okay?"

He held up one finger and gasped out, "Just hold on. That was a lot of exercise that I wasn't planning on."

I had to laugh. "Come on, let's go back to the bus."

"Video games?" he asked.

"I was actually thinking Star Wars marathon, but--"
