Chapter 40: Stories and Surprises

(a/n) sorry for the late update, I suck. :(

"And that's how I ended up here," I finished sadly, rubbing my eyes. I hated the ending, I always started tearing up when I thought about the last time I saw Michael and my friends.

Officer Greene looked astonished and a little disturbed. "That's a lot to take in at once, Miss Ortega."

"Ain't it?" I agreed. "So, what do you think? I swear that kidnapping these guys was an accident, I never meant for any of this to happen."

"I don't think anyone meant for this to happen, especially Miss Greenfield," Officer Greene said. He took off his sunglasses and cleaned them on his shirt. "I have your charges right here. You're charged with third-degree kidnapping, since you held the boys from 5 Seconds of Summer somewhere where they could not be found, without their consent, and with a use of force. You're looking at a lifetime of imprisonment here."

I could feel myself shrinking with every word he uttered. The odds of me getting out of here did not seem to be in my favor.

"But you heard my story," I pleaded with him. "It was Allison's idea to take them to the Great Empty, not mine! And sure, it was against their will, but Michael admitted that he didn't call for help when he had the chance. He didn't want to leave! And, um, yeah, I guess I did use a little force."

"You openly admitted to assaulting police officers," Officer Greene said coldly.

"Hey, I told you that I would tell you the truth, and nothing but the truth," I said defensively, but my willpower was crumpling. "What else do you want me to do?"

"There is the matter of your parole," the officer said, shuffling the papers on the table. "If the boys of 5 Seconds of Summer speak on your behalf and wish for your early release, it could happen. You just need to swear that you will act in good behavior and--"

"I swear!" I burst out, straightening up in my chair. "I swear that I'll be good! What about the boys? When can they vouch for me?"

Officer Greene glared at me. "They'll need to set up a court date with your parents, since they aren't legal citizens of the United States."

"How long will that take?"

"Possibly a couple months."

"Months?" I squeaked out. I ran my hands through my hair despairingly. "Please, you have to let me out! I swear that I'll be good! I didn't mean for any of this to happen!"

"Be quiet," he growled at me. "Complaining doesn't increase your chances of release."

"What's Allison's sentence?" I asked compulsively.

"As you kids say, that's none of your beeswax," the officer said.

I wrinkled my nose. "No one says that. But she's the one who started all of this, right? She used me for my tae kwon do skills, she threatened me, she technically sexually assaulted the boys. This is all her fault."

Officer Greene hesitated. "I'll be hearing her side of the story later today, but go on."

"Well, Allison dragged me backstage so she could collect hair samples or whatever," I explained, emphasizing her name. "Allison told me to attack the boys and hold them hostage. Allison made me drive from state to state for her own selfish wants. Allison threatened me to do her bidding. Allison kissed and touched the boys without their consent. If it wasn't for her, none of this ever would have happened."

Officer Greene was taking notes while I talked, and that filled me with hope. Maybe I had a chance to get out of here. Maybe he was finally starting to see my side of things.
