Chapter Two
The R.A.
The next morning, Stephanie and I attended Orientation together, then went to a Coffee Java located on campus near our dorm.
It was busy with students and teachers coming and going with their favorite type of java. Stephanie and I sat in a corner by an all glass walls.
"I think this is my new favorite place for my french vanilla double capp cappuccino!" I said after a nice slow sip. It was delicious!
Stephanie nodded her head in agreement as she gently blew on her double hazelnut nonfat macchiato.
I rubbed my neck and sighed. "That mattress killed me again last night."
Stephanie looked a mix of surprise and apologetic, "Really? That's horrible. The school should know better. Don't they want their students to get a good night's rest?" She mused. "Maybe you should try talking with housing or someone?"
I shrugged my shoulders, "Yeah, I am going to have to because if I have to go four semesters on that mattress I'll probably go postal."
We chuckled at my non-realistic threat and went on to other subjects like cute guys. Stephanie would comment on a few random hot guys once they left and were out of hearing range. She was shy but when she knew they couldn't hear her she would let her opinions fly free.
After we finished our drinks we parted ways. I headed to the main advisor building on a mission.
That evening I spent hours speaking to a handful of people trying to get a new mattress. Nothing worked. None of them had any answers or suggestions for me and none were willing to replace the mattress. I was frustrated so I headed back to my dorm.
On the way up to my room I ran into my dorms RA, resident adivsor. She was a tall dark tan skinned woman with honey colored eyes. She sort of reminded me of an Amazonian woman. She sniffed the air as I looked up into her eyes. I felt as if I were being hypnotized by her piercing honey eyes. She cleared her throat loudly - successfully snapping me out of my daze.
"I'm sorry," I gawked. "I didn't mean to walk right into you." I couldn't believe I ran into another person.
Her close proximity made me feel self-conscious and the way she sniffed the air and eyed me like a bug had my confidence slowly melting into nothing. I wondered if I smelled bad but didn't dare check; we were mere inches apart.
She smiled an amused smirk, "Well this is new. I never thought I'd see one of you in College."
I tilted my head confused from her strange way of addressing me, "Excuse me?" I was beginning to get offended but she quickly interrupted my train of thought.
She sighed like she was bored already and waved her hand like she was shooing a bug, "Anyways, what do you want? I don't have all day."
"I... uh," I shook my head to clear my thoughts -what was wrong with this woman, "My mattress.... it's... unbearably hard. Is there anyway to get it replaced?"
She looked at me even more bored than a second before and rolled her eyes at me, "Buy one." She began to walk around me.
"I don't have enough money, I was wondering if there is an extra one in dorm storage or if I can apply to get a new one somewhere?"
She paused and looked annoyed now. "No and no. New mattresses are the sole responsibility of the boarder." She took one step before I stopped her again.
"Well, do you know where I can look for a temp job or something?"
She rolled her eyes again and huffed. "Go to the Coffee Java. There will be a girl there tomorrow for," she paused and lowered her voice, "our kinds special jobs." She abruptly walked away then.
I was left there gawking at her back confused and a little peeved the way she treated me. She was definitely strange and rude. I sighed. At least I knew where I could look for a temp job.
So that left me with having to sleep on that rock mattress for a little while longer.
There was a soft tap on my door around eight p.m. For a moment I thought I was hearing things until my new friend Stephanie piped up.
"Kenzie? You in there," she asked.
Her voice sounded a little off, maybe a little shaky.I put my Orientation book down on my bed, keeping the page I was on face down, and hurried to answer the door. I opened it wide so Stephanie could enter but she wasn't paying attention. Instead, she was looking over her shoulder and down the hall towards her room.
"Stephanie," I whispered.
She jumped squeaking in fright, throwing her hands on her chest and gaping at me. "Damn, you scared the crap out of me." She finally entered and shut my door behind her like she was being chased by the boogie man or something.
I giggled at her reaction. "What's wrong with you? Seen a ghost or something?" I joked.
"No," she blushed and paused to regain her thoughts and breath, "that R.A. is just a little too freaky for my liking." She sat in my chair that went to the study desk.
I went back to my rock hard bed and sat Indian style. "Ah come on. She does seem a bit off and a little rude but freaky?" I laughed out now, because I knew how she felt. The R.A. definitely put off a strange vibe.
"I overheard her talking to someone and she was laughing wickedly and saying crazy shit," Stephanie rubbed her right arm with her left as if she were cold and I noticed she had goose bumps.
"Like?" I prodded.
"She was telling someone, I guess on her cell, I don't know I didn't see her, just heard her," Stephanie spoke quickly in a rambling kind of way, "that all the human girls in our dorm better not bleed because there was a vampire attending school."
My eye brows shot up in bewilderment.
Stephanie continued, "And that she couldn't believe one had decided to attend college. That out of all of her four hundred years, she had never seen one interested in continuing their education. Then she laughed more and when she stopped talking all of a sudden I ran, and here I am." She finally finished but was all out of breath again.
I thought about what Stephanie had said as she caught her breath. The accidental encounter definitely made her upset because she was shaking and shivering in front of me. I couldn't believe she would even consider any of that as truth to the point of scaring her this much.
I rolled my eyes, "You don't actually believe in all that supernatural mumbo jumbo, do you?"
She took a second to think before realizing the impossibilities and slowly shaking her head no sheepishly.
"She was probably playing some sort role playing game with someone," I mused out load. "There aren't vampires and she definitely isn't four hundred years old."
Stephanie finally giggled. "Yeah, your right. Sorry I over reacted." Her blush deepened.
"No worries, she is a little strange, even for me," I joked and laughed. "Just earlier I was asking her about how to get a new mattress and she went all weird on me."
"Really? How?" She asked curiously, shifting to the edge of the chair.
"Well, when she told me where I could look for a job she leaned in closer to me and whispered that she knew a temp service with special jobs for our kind."
Stephanie looked at me like she didn't have an idea what language I was speaking. "What?"
"I know right, weird!" We both giggled.
After that she finally relaxed and joined me on my bed. We sat up till midnight talking and having fun on our behalf from our strange encounter with our dorms R.A. What ever that woman was into I knew I didn't want any part of it. .
