Chapter Twenty
I sat in Dr. Ryland's office, waiting for him to say something, anything, as to why the blood tests were inconclusive.
He smiled, which looked forced, and continued, "I must have contaminated the specimen when I collected it from you. You were still, unfortunately, filthy from being in the unsanitary dungeon." He looked as though he were pleased with the explanation he gave me but I still wondered if that were either the half truth or not the truth at all.
I took a deep breath before answering him, "Very well."
Dr. Ryland looked relieved and smiled a genuine smile before clapping his hands together, "Excellent," he said enthusiastically. He moved about the room to collect what he needed to draw my blood.
He then proceeded to prep the area at the crook of my arm. After rubbing the area with alcohol, he placed a tourniquet above my elbow and felt for the vein. He found it immediately and took hold of a needle and swiftly inserted it. He moved so smooth and quick, that I hadn't even seen him grab the vacutainer and inserted it to draw the blood. He took seven vials. When he withdrew the needle he then placed gauze and a band-aide. I swayed in my seat.
"Are you alright?" Dr. Ryland placed his hand gently on my shoulder and looked to me with concern.
"Yes, I guess I didn't eat enough this morning," I figured. I took two deep breaths while Dr. Ryland left and returned within five seconds with an apple juice box. I looked curiously as to why vampires would drink apple juice.
Dr. Ryland, sensing my puzzlement answered my unspoken question, "It's for the human's we have when they donate." He smiled sweetly. "This entire area, that you've seen within the security fence, is the donor facility. It houses each human comfortably in their own fully furnished apartment.
They are given the best medical care while here. They can either cook for them selves with groceries from our open pantry or eat the delicious cuisines that we have top chefs prepare three times a day.
Each day brings a new menu and new scheduled activities they can join, or watch, or not. It's basically whatever they want.
They only have to donate every two days or every other day unless they don't feel well and then they wouldn't donate until they were well again.
I drank the apple juice but still felt light headed and hungry.
"How do you feel now?" Dr. Ryland asked.
"Better," I lied with a smile. "Will you tell me what you find when you are done?"
He nodded with a smile but I could see that it was forced. I wanted to say something but the guard that had brought me to Dr. Ryland entered the room.
"I will see you soon Kenzie. Thank you again for coming by," he said before waving for me to join the guard.
On the way back to the castle I felt like I was sleep walking. It was hard to keep my eyes open. The guard walked me back inside and left me to my own devices. I made my way to my room, my vision resembling a blurry dream. I was surprised the guard hadn't noticed anything off about me, but he probably didn't really care. How I made it to my room was a mystery but I did. I also found the floor with a hard thump.
