Widow

Bright and early the following morning, I made myself get out of bed

Bright and early the following morning, I made myself get out of bed. My muscles ached and I stretched as much as I could before relieving them under a steaming hot shower. After getting dressed and brushing my teeth I made my way to the dorms kitchen. It was eerily quiet. Everyone was still asleep. I wished to myself that I was still asleep as well but sleeping longer on that mattress was a no go.

After fixing myself a bagel with cream cheese and grabbing a bottle water, I ran back upstairs to grab my purse from my room.

"You are on the prowl especially early this morning," a smooth seductive voice whispered behind me.

My heart clenched in my chest and my breath grated on a loud gasp. "Damn, you scared the crap out me."

The R. A. looked amused and raised her left perfectly done eyebrow. She leaned with her right shoulder against the wall and her left foot across her right. She tweaked her eyes in amusement.

"Uh, yeah. I was going to the Java cafe you told me about. That lady will be there right?" I ignored the goosebumps that formed on my arms thanks to the R. A.

"Yes. Her name is Widow."

"Widow?" I repeated. I was worried I didn't hear her right.

She sighed and her amused looked quickly turned into agitation. "Yes." She bit. "Widow." She said slightly louder but still low enough to not wake anyone.

"Thank you." I nodded. "By the way, I never got your name."

"Pepper." Just then her cell rang and without saying another word she turned sharply and walked away from me.

I stood there befuddled a few moments before turning around and heading through my rooms door. I finished my bagel, grabbed my purse and left. Thankfully without running into Pepper again.

The Java Cafe wasn't far from the dorm, just three blocks down and two blocks to the left. I walked in and greeted an older guy behind the counter before looking around to find Widow. There were only three other people including my self there that early so the only woman sitting at a booth in the corner of the room had to be Widow.

She had jet black hair with grey and white highlights for her bangs. She had heavy black eye liner around her eyes, black eye shadow and black lipstick. There were piercings in her left eye, right nostril, and upper and bottom lip.

I cleared my throat, "Widow?" I asked softly.

She briefly sniffed the air then looked me over so fast that I would have missed it if I had blinked. I thought her actions strange like Peppers but watched her as she continued to type on her black and hot pink laptop.

"Well, have a seat. I don't have all day," she smirked towards the laptop screen. I sat down in the booth bench across from her. "When Pepper told me you were here I honestly didn't believe her." She looked up at me again, this time taking a little longer to look me over. She furrowed her brow in thought before shrugging her shoulders and averting her eyes back to the screen. "So how can I help you?"

Yes, just like Pepper I found her to be very odd and eerie. It took me moment to gather my thoughts before I could answer her. "Yea, Pepper said you could help me find a job."

Widow looked back at me with intrigue. "Alright, what are you looking for? Anything in particular?"

I nodded,  "Something near the campus and that won't conflict with my class schedule."

Widow looked back to her screen and began to type so fast that I didn't think anyone capable of. I watched her in amazement for a couple of minutes before she grabbed a note pad and pen and began to write something down. "I have a nanny position available and it's only two miles away." She tore the paper from the pad and handed it to me.

"Won't that interfere with my classes?" I looked at the address on the paper.

She huffed sarcastically, "No, because it's for late afternoon and night time." She made it sound like I should have known that bit of information already. "Besides, it's says they can be flexible if a college student wanted to apply."

I could tell she was really getting annoyed with me so I quickly said, "Thank you."

"Call the number and set up an appointment to be interviewed. Don't just show up," she snapped at me before going back to type on her laptop.

"Thank you," I said once again and slid out of the booth.

Widow just nodded and didn't even bother to look up from her laptop. I got the vibe she didn't care if she didn't like me or not, if that makes any sense at all.

After walking a couple of blocks back towards the dorm, I pulled out my cell and dialed the number. Butterflies made loops in my stomach.

A man with a deep thick voice answered in what resembled a British accent. I didn't know if it was British or not but it sounded like it to me.
"Lord Drayven's Residence, Sir Renfrey speaking, how may I help you?"

I gulped loudly and was momentarily at a loss for words. A Lord?

"Hello?" The voice on the other end quickly became agitated.

"Hi, yes, sorry. I'm inquiring about the Nanny position," I quickly spoke and swallowed a huge lump in my throat as my nervousness grew.

"One Moment please," he said before putting me on hold.

I didn't have long to wait but if I thought the first voice made me nervous then the second one was going to give me a heart attack.

"Hello, this is Lord Drayven. With whom am I speaking with?" he asked sounding very impatient.

"Kenzie Silverfall," I said a little too loudly. I was glad I was just on the phone and not in person yet because that would have made me more embarrassed.

"I can interview you at eight p.m. Kenzie Silverfall."

"Thank you sir." He didn't give me a chance to grab a pen and paper as he called out his address in rapid succession. Luckily, Widow had written it down already.

"And Kenzie Silverfall," he spoke slower and softer, inducing a strong wave of goose bumps to pop up on my back and down my arms to the point I shook.

This was a little weird, "Yes sir."

"Do not be late," he said and then promptly hung up.

I looked down and stared blankly at my cell phone. I seriously contemplated on not going at all. But I really needed a new mattress.
