The Newbie
Arriving at school a few days before classes began, one would think you'd have enough time to settle in your room, acquire the books you need, and learn the campus but, no. Not with my luck. I should have known. Of' course some of the other girls in my dorm had been here for two weeks already and the rest at least a week. But for some reason I figured a few days before would be enough. What was I thinking?
I was already late this morning signing up for orientation and running to get into line when 'bam', I run right into a girl loaded down with an arm full of books. Books flew in all directions and I think I even saw a shoe go by my face.
"I am so sorry," I burst out immediately. My cheeks shade bright red and my heart continues to race from my run and now from my alarm of possibly injuring someone.
I offered my hand to the petite girl with jet black hair and black rimmed glasses that currently gaped up at me from her spot on the ground. Her mouth hung open in apparent appalled shock and her eyes were almost as big as her glasses.
Her shock wore off quickly and turned into pure embarrassment. "Well, I can't say that was my first crash since arriving here," she says as she takes my offered hand and lets me pull her to her feet. "But unfortunately probably won't be my last either." She sighs and brushes her bottom free from whatever dirt might be on her.
I didn't see any but didn't say anything about it either, instead I begin to pick up her stack of books.
"Again, I'm so sorry. I was late and should have been paying attention -," I babbled on until she waved me off.
"Really, it's ok," she lets me off easier than one should and starts to pick up the last two books on the ground before moving to slip on her left flat that fell off.
I knew I saw a shoe fly by.
"Here, let me help you carry these," I offer. "I just have to sign up for orientation and then I can walk you to your dorm."
She smiled sweetly, "I have to sign in too so, sure. That will be great thanks!" She shuffled some books around and gave me half the stack.
We both got into line. Thankfully it wasn't that long and was moving rather quickly.
"Where is your dorm?" I ask after turning to face her behind me. I was hoping it was at least in the same direction as mine.
She points in the right direction, "Correlli Sumpter Dorm."
I smile brightly, "That's my dorm too!"
She smiles wide and I see two dimples on the right side of her mouth deepen. "I am Stephanie!"
"I'm Kenzie!" I reply and relaxed a little now that I finally know someone. Being alone and not knowing a single soul was daunting.
"Finally, I know someone!" She beams.
"I was beginning to wonder if I got stuck in a dorm full of just snooties," she giggles.
"Me too," I agree with a nod of my head.
"I'm on the second floor, room 203."
"Awesome, I'm room 208!" she beamed with honest excitement.
We laughed a little and moved with the line.
"When did you arrive," I asked while balancing the weight of the books.
"Four days ago," she answered with that double dimpled smile. "You?"
I chuckled, "Three days ago." At least now I know I wasn't the only one to wait till the last minute to show up.
We signed in on the check in form and received our 'Welcome' pamphlets and itinerary for the next two days. We then walked back to our dorm together and got to know each other a little on the way.
She was an only child like myself, and both her parents were at least still a live. I gave her the short version of my parents death just stating it as a freak accident. I didn't dare go into details. It was all still too raw to talk about. She fortunately understood and offered her condolences before graciously changing the subject. I knew right then she was going to be a good friend.
We reached our dorm and headed up to the second floor and straight to her room. It was just down and across the hall from mine.
After unlocking her door, she picked up the half stack of books she sat down on the floor, so she could grab her keys from her bag, and entered.
I followed her in and after she sat her stack on a petite study desk she pointed at the pile, "Just pile them on top please."
She smiled sweetly, "Thank you for helping me with those."
"No, thanks necessary. I did knock you over after all," I blushed.
"Still, thanks." She quickly hugged me which surprised me. She stepped back towards her bed and sat down, bouncing a tad bit in the process. "So, this is my room." She waved her arms to the sides.
Her room was similar to mine, with a full size bed, small study desk and chair beside a table and drawers and tall dresser drawer beside the closet door, except for one minor detail - her walls were painted soft powdery pink.
I nodded my head while still looking around, "I like it. It's very pink."
She chuckled. "Yea, I guess the former tenant really liked pink."
We giggled together."It was nice meeting you," I said as I inched closer to the door. "I need to prepare my list of what books I'll need."
"Yea, nice to bump into you," she laughed and stood up. She walked to me and hugged me good bye before opening her door for me.
"If you need-" we both began to say at the same time. We both burst out laughing. I blushed lightly from the awkward moment.
"Yea, same. If you need anything come knocking!" She said enthusiastically before I was half way to my room.
I had to admit, she was a character and I really liked her.Once alone in my room, I kicked off my shoes towards a corner and plopped down on my full size bed, quickly regretting the plop. The bed was as hard as a rock. I causally rubbed my bottom and plotted the mattresses quick demise.
After sighing and starring at the bed, I went through my expenses and groaned inwardly. I had nothing extra to solve my rock mattress problem and I sure wasn't asking my parents accountant on an advance on my trust funds allowance. I was going to have to figure out what I could do. Get dorm housing to get it, or some other school financial aid or I would have to get a job.
