Chapter Eight
Once we were back in my office, I finished signing my signature to the paperwork and confidentiality agreement. When I looked back up to her, her expression caught me off guard for a brief moment. Her hazel eyes had lightened in color and she looked curious as she stared into my eyes before looking at the papers I had been signing.
"You will need to be here promptly at 6 pm every evening. Saturdays I will need you here at 4 pm. And Sundays you may have off." I shuffled the papers toward her so she could go over them and I continued, "Your salary is written on the first page," I motioned towards the papers.
She lifted the page up to see and suddenly took quick gasp of air. My eyes zeroed in on her right index finger and on to the tiniest bud of blood. My nose caught the most delicious scent I had ever smelled in my entire existence. I felt my teeth and gums ache and throat burn from the need to have that life-giving fluid to flow down my greedy throat.
"Paper cut," she blushed and rose her finger up slightly.
Her voice cut through my fog of hunger and the realization that she wasn't a vampire struck me like a plague. My mind raced, my heart nearly stopped all together and I was desperately trying to work out several things at once.
She lowered her hand.
"Your," how can she be a human and smell like a vampire and vice versa? Was she a spy or a hunter or a rebel? Or worse, a half breed?
She looked down to the paper in her hand and choked on what I assume was air.
"Fifteen thousand dollars a week?" she whispered incredulously.
I cleared my throat and my mind, snapping back to the moment at hand, "if it isn't sufficient enough we can," I couldn't even believe I had said that but then she waved her hand to interrupt me. I was even more confused.
"No, this is too much actually," she spoke softly.
I was perplexed and my mind wasn't working properly with the thick scent of her blood still dancing around me. I had to get out of this room before I.... "I must speak with Sir Renfrey about," think, think, think, "something I just remembered," my voice sounded nervous and that even had me angry. I was always sure. Always straight forward and always calm. But here, and now, in front of this strange being, my mind was a vortex all of its own.
I left her alone in my office. I closed the door behind myself and stared forward dazed, my hand still on the door knob.
"Lord Mitchell...." Sir Renfrey began but once he saw the expression on my face he sped to me. He put his hand on my shoulder. "Mitch, what's wrong?" He looked from my face to the door and back to me. "What happened?" He shook my shoulder, "Mitchell, what,"
"She's human," I said. My eyes hadn't left the spot on the wall across the hall until then. I slowly turned my gaze, "She's human Blaine," I said to my best friend, Sir Blaine Renfrey.
