James and Sirius sat in the Gryffindor common room enjoying a brief game of wizards chess before breakfast.

"Oi mate, what's up with that Valerie girl?" Valerie heard James ask Sirius.
"Nothing." He said pushing my hair behind my ears.
"Yeah right. He said, chucking a chess piece at him.You win."
Sirius smiled at his victory and said
"You want to head to breakfast?"
"Sure."

It was Halloween, one of the boys favorite holidays, especially since it was the one day a year Remus couldn't blame them for pranking someone, since everyone does it.
The tables were piled with Halloween decorated foods, pumpkins were floating beside the candles and the ceiling was a foggy, grey sky.
Valerie picked two pumpkin pastries, an omelet and a glass of cranberry juice.

"It's lovely isn't it." Valerie declared, pointing to the ceiling and the assortment of floating pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns.
"Very."
"Happy birthday Val." Lily said sitting down next to her.
"Wait, it's your birthday?" Sirius said flabbergasted.
"Yeah." She said shyly.
"If I had known I would've gotten you a present." He said truthfully.
"It fine, really, I mean we only just met so I wouldn't expect you to know my birthday."
"But that's the thing, I want to know more about you."
"Well I think that can be arranged." She said smiling.

The two went out to Hogsmeade to find a gift for Valerie, stopping by honeydukes so she could pick out her choice of sweet. Valerie chose a cauldron cake and some licorice wands.
"Happy birthday." Sirius said handing her the gifts.
She brushed her hair behind her ear and grinned appreciatively. Thanks Sirius."

"You really didn't have to do this." She said as they walked around Hogsmeade. Truthfully, Valerie felt awkward when people bought her things; it didn't feel right. But Sirius insisted on getting her something, which she couldn't quite understand why. They weren't the best of friends and they barely knew each other, although she did consider the fact that he just wanted to get to know her.

It was odd, for Valerie at least. Why had Sirius all of a sudden taken an interest in her just now?
