Chapter 45: Nate

The commotion was wild as I stepped out of class. I could see that heaps students were gathered around something, someone and my heart sank when I saw who it was. I saw Aliyah laying on the ground with blood rushing from her head as the students whispered to each other.
"Get away!"
I pushed through the crowd shoving them away from her and I saw Lexi was crouched down by her side but she stood up when I reached her.
"Ali?"
"Mr Bennett went to call the ambulance."
"Nate don't worry."
"What happened?" I enquired.
"I don't know I came out of class and saw her laying here."
I could see tears in her eyes as Mr Bennett came racing toward us.
"Everybody step back the ambulance is on its way." He shouted.
The students began to disperse In the corridor as Mr Bennett and the nurse made there way towards us.
"Don't worry Nate." I heard Lexi say.
"This is all my fault."

Lexi and I were told to stay at school as Aliyah was taken away in the ambulance but I couldn't let her be there alone. Lexi drove me to the hospital and we both raced up to the front counter searching for her.
"Where looking for Aliyah Dawson."
"Are you family?"
I hesitated for a moment I was family, not technically but I still was but I needed to lie otherwise I wouldn't be told anything hospitals wouldn't understand.
"She's our sister."
"Ok she's down the hall in emergency she might be awhile but I'll tell the doctor your here."
"Thank you."
Lexi and I sat outside the emergency need as we waited for news and moments later a doctor walked out of the room holding a clip board.
"Are you two here for Aliyah Dawson?"
"Yes! How is she?"
"We've managed to stabilise her for now but we will need to operate immediately she has suffered major head trauma and is haemorrhaging in her brain.
"She was punched?"
"That's what it looks like to us."
I sat down on the lounge and signed it had to of been Caitlyn nobody else would do this to her that meant it was my fault.
"Nate are you ok?"
I heard Lexi say.
"Caitlyn it had to of been her."
"Don't worry about that now all we need to worry about is Aliyah."
"Ok when can you start the operation?"
"Right away."
"Please make sure she's alright I can't loose her."
"I'll do my best sir."
I sat on the lounge at the hospital with Lexi as I saw Aliyah's Mum walking towards us with the twin in their carriers.
"Thank you for calling me Nate."
"It's fine."
"Have you seen her?"
"No we were aloud to go with her in the ambulance and she was taken away as soon as she got here."
"Where is she now?"
"They're operating on her."
"Have they said anything is she gonna be ok?"
"I'm not too sure but she looked really bad, what happened to her?"
Aliyah's mum was in tears as I tried my best to hold mine in to speak. I couldn't cry not in front of everybody I couldn't be weak.
"I think I was Caitlyn."
"Your ex"
"Yeah?"
"How has it gone this far?"
"I don't know."
"Caitlyn is your ex you should have been able to control her now my daughter is fighting for her life."
Lexi spoke up in shock to defend me.
"It's not his fault he did nothing wrong."
I looked to Lexi and then back to Aliyah's mum.
"No she's right it's all my fault."
"Nate no it's not."
My heart sank as I crouched down on the ground to the sound of Luna's cry.
"It's ok sweet heart everything is gonna be ok I hope."
"I'm gonna take the twins home."
"That'd be best."
Lexi spoke up and began walking over to take one of the twins carriers as I calmed Luna down to stop her from screaming.
"What are you doing?"
"I'll drive you."
"No I can take the bus."
"At night with two babies? I don't think so."
"I'm ok I've done it heaps of times before."
"Not with the twins."
"We'll be fine the bus stops right outside the house."
"So does my car."
"Still."
"Nate come on I'm taking you home."
"Ok you win."
I stopped before picking up Reeds carrier and turned back to Aliyah's Mum who was on the phone.
"Please tell me if you hear anything."
She covered the phone with her hand and looked up at me.
"I will."
"Thank you."
"Are you ready?"
"Yeah."
