I bathed the twins and got them ready for bed as Lexi prepared their bottles down stairs. Lexi brought the bottles up stairs and we both fed them and then placed both of them in their cots when they were fast asleep. I sat down on the bed watching the twins sleep as I heard Lexi behind me.
"Thank you for helping me get them to sleep."
"It's ok I'm always happy to help."
"I've just never looked after them alone before."
"Nate?"
"Yeah?"
"Your not alone I'm here for you and Aliyah I'm not going anywhere."
"Thanks."
"Would you be able to stay a bit longer? Just incase they wake up?"
"Yeah I'll be here for as long as you need."
"What if she doesn't make it? What will I do then? I'd never be able to look after them."
"She's gonna be fine you need a distraction to stop you from worrying."
"I don't think anything would work."
Lexi raced down stairs and came back moments later with a bottle of wine and two glasses.
"This has always been my favourite distraction for my messed up life."
"That's not ours."
"I'll replace it."
"Then what are you waiting for pour me a glass."
Lexi poured me a glass as I stared at it swirling it in my hand as I thought about Aliyah.
"Just stop thinking for a while she's gonna be fine."
"I hope so."
The two of us sat on the bed drinking in silence until Lexi spoke up.
"Is it working?"
"Huh?"
"The wine?"
"Oh," I stared down at my empty glass then looked back up at Lexi."
"Yeah I guess, but a couple more wouldn't hurt."
"You sure?"
"It's helping I think I've finally calmed down."
Lexi refilled my glass and them placed the bottle back down.
"Yeah you've stopped worrying about.."
Lexi stopped in her sentence not wanting to bring Aliyah up.
"Aliyah?"
"Sorry I didn't want to remind you."
"No it's ok, she's gonna be fine remember."
"She's strong of coarse she is."
I took a long sip of wine then Lexi continued speaking.
"Anyway it's better not to think of it for now."
"Think of what?"
"Ah exactly your good."
Lexi and I smiled at each other as I placed my glass on the bedside table.
"There's something I've been wanting to do all night."
"What's that?"
"This."
I closed my eyes and leaned closer towards Lexi until my lips touched hers for a short second before she pushed me away.
"Nate what are you doing?"
"Just kiss me."
The two of us kissed again as I took off Lexi's jacket and then lifted her dress over her head and threw it on the ground.
~~~
I woke up in the morning to the sound of the twins crying and rolled over to see Lexi laying next to me half naked.
"No, no, no, no."
I immediately got up and put my pants on which were lying on the floor. I picked up Reed from his cot as Lexi rolled over and spoke up.
"Good morning."
"You have to leave, now!"
"What?"
"Last night shouldn't have happened it was a mistake."
"I know I'm so sorry."
"What did you think was gonna happen with wine? That was a stupid idea."
"Nate calm down."
"How am I going to explain this to Aliyah? I love her and now she's gonna hate me."
"She won't hate you, just don't tell her."
"You want me to lie?"
"It's not a lie if she doesn't know anything about it."
"I can't keep secrets from her."
"It's the only way Nate."
"No."
"If you don't we will both loose her forever."
"You need to get dressed and leave."
"Don't you want me to take you back to the hospital?"
"I'll catch a bus."
"Nate please just let me take you."
"No this is how this happened, just leave please."
"Ok I'll see you later but I really am sorry."
I needed to see Aliyah and I had no one to call there was only one person but I hadn't spoken to her in ages. I got out my phone and dialled my mums number and waited for an answer.
"Hello?"
"Mum? It's Nate."
"I haven't heard from you in ages is everything ok?"
"Yeah, well no it's Aliyah she's in hospital."
"What? What happened."
"She was punched at school and she's really bad."
"Are you ok?"
"Yeah I just needed to ask you a favour."
"Anything."
"Would you be able to babysit for a little bit I really need to see her and make sure she's alright."
"Of coarse id love to see my grand babies."
"Really?"
"Yes and I'm sorry for everything I did and said to you and Aliyah."
"It's ok mum I understand why you did it."
"Thank you that means a lot to me and I've really missed you."
"I've missed you too."
"What time did you need me there?"
"As soon as possible if that's ok."
"Yeah of coarse I'm leaving now."
"Thanks mum."
