Since the Northwests think I have a Summer job picking strawberries, I wait for my ride to the airport in front of the strawberry field. At 12 pm sharp, a sleek black Lincoln stops in front of me. The driver rolls down the window. "Are you Isabelle Carter?"
"Yup"
"Hop in" she tells me, smiling now.
The ride to the airport is quiet. I study the driver. Her gold name tag says "ALICE" on it. She looks at me briefly and smiles. Then she concentrates on the road again.
"Are you nervous?" she asks.
"Kinda"
"There's no reason for that. Last Summer, Pacifica Northwest turned into a whole new person. No one knows why. Some say she was put under an ancient spell. I don't believe it, though. But you didn't hear it from me." She says, winking.
We arrive at the airport. I thank the driver for the ride and info. Then I go through the extremely long boarding process. When I get on the plane, I open my backpack. I go through the books I packed. Let's see...The Outsiders, Number the Stars, Walk Two Moons, Where the Red Fern Grows, Make Lemonade, Hatchet... Ooh! Tuck Everlasting. A classic and one of my personal favorites.
I settle in my seat and open Tuck Everlasting. The book is about a 10-year-old girl, Winnie, who finds a spring in her family's woods. It turns out that the spring grants eternal life, so she has to decide whether to join her new friends (the Tucks) in living forever, or live a natural life. In the end, Winnie decides not to live forever. Like I said, it's one of my favorites.
When the plane lands in Bend, Oregon, I use the money the Northwests included to buy a bus ticket.
Since I finished Tuck Everlasting on the plane, I move on to The Outsiders. It's pretty intense. I haven't read it before, so I am very engrossed in it. I'm so concentrated, I read for an hour straight before I finally look up. When I do look up, I see that the car is empty except for a girl, a boy, and a pig. Yes, a pig. In a cage, of course.
The girl has light brown hair and looks about my age. She is wearing a yellow skirt, black flats, a blue headband, a huge smile with braces, and a sky-blue sweater with a sun that is smiling and wearing sunglasses. How can she be wearing a sweater in the Summer? It's ninety degrees out! She seems beyond happy to be on the hot, smelly bus with a pig, a demigod, and a guy reading a book.
The guy looks just like the girl, except he is dressed in an orange shirt, a navy blue vest, gray shorts, sneakers, and a lumberjack hat. He is reading a book called "The Sibling Brothers in the Case of the Caper-Case Caper: The Sequel" He is clicking a pen and mumbling to himself. I catch things like "Ooh, interesting... but who stole the capers... AGAIN....?"
I have to smile at that. I read that book last month. And it really was and interesting book. I couldn't believe the ending when the Sibling brothers found the papers in the butler's closet.
"You're not going to believe who did it," I tell him.
He looks up at me. "You read the Sibling Brothers series?"
"Yeah. I'm waiting for the new one to come out. There's just something about that series."
"I know what you mean. I like its air of unpredictable mystery and some humor I don't understand. And the characters are so thought out!"
"Yeah, I mean the Sibling brothers are cautious, but they take so many risks!"
"I agree." he says. "So where are you going?"
"Gravity Falls" I reply. The girl chooses this moment to jump on me. Literally.
"OMG! You're going to Gravity Falls!? We are, too! Right, Dipper?" she looks at him expectantly.
"Mabel, you're scaring her," he says to her.
"No, it's fine! I'm Isabelle." I say.
"Hi, I'm Mabel, the fun one, that's my pig, Waddles, and this dork is my twin brother Dipper. We're 13 and we live in Piedmont, California. Except in the Summer. During the Summer we live in Gravity Falls with our Grunkle Stan and our Great Uncle Ford" says Mabel.
Dipper rolls his eyes. "Mabel, how do you know she's not a kidnapper? She could be trying to con us!" he says, but I can tell he's joking.
"Don't listen to him, Isabelle. I know a new friend when I see one" says Mabel.
I smile. There's something about the twins I can't quite place. But it's not a bad feeling. It's the feeling I get when I wake up and Annabeth is home safe from a quest. It's the feeling I get when I just know everything is going to be okay. The feeling is relief.
