The mattress sunk under our weight. I felt his chest expand behind me, his arm around my waist. I couldn't sleep. It was one of those nights when you feel tired but it's impossible for you to fall asleep. I was restless and one specific things seemed to bother me.

The dream from the other night was different. Max was in it. This was the first time I had seen someone that I knew in my dream. He was being escorted by a group of mutants down the bright-lighted hallway. I saw him through the window of the lab, and upon him seeing me, he kicked at them and tried to escape, to help me. The lady who usually would by now try and inject me, turned around instead all looked to the glass door, where Max's face was pressed against it by a mutant, "now, now," she said, "Where are your manners Max? You know that you shouldn't be fighting at a celebration"

"Celebration? What are we celebrating? A million more murders?"

"It's not murder, it's for the society, our society,"

" Seriously? You're willing to kill innocent people for the good of our society? This isn't a society, this is a freaking prison!"

"you ungrateful twat! How dare you go against my word, after everything I have given you. I spared your life and now I'm taking hers,"

"you might have let me live,Eve, but being one of them..." he says gesturing towards one of the mutants in lab coats, "...is worse than living,"

I woke up screaming. Max sat up quickly behind me, "What is it?"

I was sweating and my throat felt dry.

"The dream?" Max asked looking worried.

I nodded, "This one was different. You were there and the woman, knew you, and you knew her, and ugh, what's wrong with me?! Am I going crazy?" I say slamming my head into the pillow that lay on the bare mattress.

"A little, maybe, but It's okay, I like crazy" Max says feeling my arms gently with his loving hands. The room was cold and his touch sent tingling sensations of warmth through my body. I sat up again, looking him straight in the eye. He put his hand behind my neck and put his forehead on mine, shutting his eyes. I could tell he was tired. "Sleep," I said planting a tiny kiss on his cheek, which he responded to by resting his head on my shoulder, and softly pecking my neck. This want for affection was finally fulfilled.

"What did you see in your dream?" He asked lying back down,

"Nothing. I don't want to talk about it"

I turned onto my side and shut my eyes.

I couldn't sleep. I checked the clock. 1:32AM. I got up slowly and went into the bathroom, locking the door behind me. The light inside there ran on batteries and it looked like it was running out, watching it flicker lightly. I leaned over the sink and looked at myself in the mirror. My hair was a mess and my eyes were red. I went over to the tub and dunked my head into it.

"Mom? Is dad coming home soon?" I asked carrying the dirty dishes to the sink.

"He has some work to do, honey"

"He's always late. It's my birthday, and he's late"

"Your father is just really caught up with his job right now. I bet he'll be home soon,"

As soon as she said that. I heard the door unlocking. I ran over to the door and met him halfway. The door swung open revealing a small wrapped box held by a tired man trying to look as awake as possible.

"Happy birthday, kitten," he said as i hugged him,

"Dad, you're late,"

"Well, I had to get you this," he said gesturing at the tiny box,

"Thanks, dad," I say taking it into the kitchen. I opened it to find a pendent necklace.

I've never taken it off since.
