She's Our Light

Chapter 8

Nick's POV

 That afternoon...

I pick up Delilah exactly at 2:30. She raises an eyebrow when she sees me, but she does remember good ol uncle Nick. She recognizes the car and comes running to it. Before getting in, she gives me a hug. I hug her back and buckle her into the car seat that I happen to carry around when I have to babysit for Delilah.

When we get to a red light, I turn around and talk to Delilah. "Delilah sweetie, we have to stop home to get some things and then I have to take you somewhere else. Can you help me get what you want?" She nods and I use the spare key hidden under the doormat to let us in. She runs upstairs and I follow her at a slower pace. I know that Delilah is only four, but she is a really smart girl. I think she can tell that something is off.

   10 minutes later...

Delilah comes back downstairs with some schoolbooks, supplies, and toys. I grab her a few snacks from the kitchen and put them into a lunchbox. Those snacks being juice, water, apples, string cheese, crackers, and a couple of sandwiches. I know that seems like a lot, but who knows what time she'll be home.  "Nick, where is mommy and daddy?" My heart skips a beat at the question. I know she'd question this. "Mommy and daddy are with the doctor right now. I'm going to take you there so you can see them okay?" She nods and go we through the process of getting into the car seat again. Yes they keep children safe, but they are one of the most difficult things that adults have to play around with.

    10 minutes later...

We arrive at the hospital. I check my phone to see I have an unread text from Simon saying the following: Demi is in room 347 in ICU. Her condition is a little bit worse than they originally thought. Don't scare Delilah. This is already hard enough as it is. -Simon

I text Simon to let him know that I'll be up with Delilah momentarily. She squeezes my hand. "Uncle Nick, I'm scared." I squeeze her hand. "I know, but everything will be okay. I promise." We ride the elevator up to the third floor, go down a few hall, check in at the nurses station, and knock on the door of room 347. Simon peers through the window and lets us in.

"Sorry for sounding the way I did in text, but I'm really stressed Nick. You must understand that." I nod. He takes Delilah from me and kisses her on the forehead. He asks her about her day and such before having her go off to the far corner of the room to do some work. Simon asks me to step off to the side with me. "As you can probably tell, Demi still isn't awake. She also has brain swelling, which has to be operated on. They're going to perform the surgery tomorrow afternoon. The doctors want to monitor Demi's condition over night. Her doctor came in here earlier to tell me the risks and post-op risks of the surgery. It's quite a lengthy list, but surgery is the best option to prevent things from getting worse."

My hands begin shaking. I try to stop them, but I can't. I love Demi more than life itself. All of these years I've stayed single in the hopes of one day winning her heart. If I ever lost Demi forever, I wouldn't survive. I also know that if Simon loses her, it would destroy him as well. Demi is our light. We need our light to stay lit.
