Chapter 22

 Nick's POV

       The next day...

        I stop by Demi and Simon's to check on him. I would have called or texted a head of time, but knowing Simon when he gets sick or hurt, he tends to isolate himself a bit. Plus, I haven't heard from him period. That troubles me. I pull into their driveway and knock on the door. A minute later, I'm face to face with a panicked looking Demi. "Demi is everything okay?" Her eyes go from my face to the floor. She mumbles something to herself. I step closer. "I'm sorry. What'd you say Demi?" She looks back up at me. "I said I think you're right. I think Simon has food poisoning. He's spent the night throwing up. I've been up all night taking care of him and even had to leave him for a few minutes to take Delilah to school." 

        Tears begin to cloud Demi's vision. She tries to hold them back but her attempt fails. Tears fall down her face to delicate, sorrowful pools. "Nick, what should I do?" She looks at me with so little hope that it knocks the wind out of me. "I think that Simon needs to go to the hospital. If he throws up again...." Screams snap Demi and I out of our conversations. We race into the house, down the hall, and stop at the bathroom. We see Simon clutching his stomach and vomiting up in the toilet. Demi stops dead when she spots blood. I cover her eyes from seeing anything else. Simon looks at me in panic. "Demi! Call 911 now!" She follows my instructions and dials 911. She shouts at the operator in panic and gives them her address. She runs back to me. "The ambulance will be here in five to seven minutes. 

        7 minutes later... 

      The ambulance finally arrives. The paramedics navigate their way through the path of vomit leading to the bathroom. They lift Simon onto a stretcher, quickly examine him, and agree that he indeed needs future medical attention. Demi hops into the ambulance. I tell Demi that I'll be following the ambulance and I'll take care of Delilah getting picked up from school. She nods and the ambulance doors close. Everyone gets into position and takes off racing to the ambulance.
