Missing My Strength
Chapter 25
Simon's POV
The next day...
It's approximately eleven in the morning. I may off by a minute or two. Dr. Troy comes in with a folder full of papers. It's marked urgent. A lump forms in my throat and Demi squeezes my hand for reassurance. This is it. The moment that makes or breaks me. I take a deep breath before turning to face Dr. Troy. "I would like to know my results Dr. Troy. The suspense alone is enough to kill me."
The frown that on her face just seconds ago turns into a half smile. "It's a combination of good and bad news. Which would you like first?" Me being the person that I am, I like to get bad news out of the way first. "The bad news." "The bad news is the your arteries are clogged and it will take a few days to completely the process of getting the water out of them." I nod taking her words in. "And what's the good news?" "The good news is that your food poisoning isn't as serious of a case as we thought. Also, the food poisoning didn't trigger the clogging of the arteries. With rest and the right medication, that will go away within 48 hours."
Dr. Troy turns to Demi. "Where do you want to go from here Demi?" She bites her lip. "Does the artery unclogging require surgery?" "Unfortunately yes. We have to do it immediately. I'm going to schedule the surgery for tomorrow. You both deserve a day to absorb the information I've told you. After all, Simon's had a lot of trauma in his body." "Indeed he has Dr. Troy. We all have in our family. Thank you though for rushing the results so we could know sooner and have a proper game plan. See you later." She nods and leaves the room. When she does, I reach for Demi.
"Demi, don't let me turn into a vegetable. I know I've been under the knife several times, but that doesn't make my fears go away. Every time I enter an OR, I'm terrified that I'm not coming out." She grabs my hands. "Don't you dare say things like that Simon. You've come out strong every time. This time isn't going to be any different. When you wake up out of the surgery fog, Delilah and I will be there. We always have been and always will be. We both love you so much. Don't ever give up hope on anything. Losing hope is dangerous territory to enter. If anyone knows that, it's me."
I stroke her arm in an affectionate manner. "I know that you and Delilah love me very much. I've never doubted that. You just have to understand I'm almost 60. I won't be around as long as you. I'm not trying to make you worry. It's just an obvious fact. If I had to choose which one us were to survive say a gunman, I'd jump in front of you to save you every time. Delilah needs her mother."
She looks at me with tear streaked eyes. "Yes Simon she does, but Delilah also needs her father. She needs both of us. You need to stop speaking as if you're dying because you're going to be around a long time. Okay?" I lean my forehead into hers. We stay that way for quite some time before pulling a part from one another.
I miss having my strength. Hospitals mess me up in the worst way. I just can't wait until I get the hell out of here and more importantly spend everyday with my family again in our wonderful home enjoying life to the fullest.
