Fading Memory

Chapter 9

Simon's POV

 The next day... surgery

I walked with Demi's surgical team until we get to the double doors marked with the signs "Authorized personal." I kiss Demi on the forehead and squeeze her hands even though she isn't aware that I am doing so. The doors close behind her and I watch my wife be taken away from me into the OR. I hate ORs with a passion. They very rarely ever mean success. Many people stand behind these doors and that's the last time they ever get to see their loved one.

I alternate pacing the waiting room and talking to Nick. He constantly looks at me with concern. I try to brush it off, but he's persistent to know my every thought. I snapped at him a couple of times. Not intentionally, but to get that point across that he's not a psychologist. The thing is I like talking about my thoughts, just in moderation during periods of high stress.

3 hours later...

Demi's doctor comes out with a strange expression on his face. A lump forms in my throat. Oh no, this can't be good. "Simon, we have good and bad news. Which do you want first?" I pause to think for a moment. "The good news please." The doctor bites his lip. "The good news is that Demi is alive and is going to come out of the surgery." I smile. "That's wonderful. I don't know how there could be any bad news to follow that." "Unfortunately there is.... it appears that the cerebal cortex in Demi's brain is swollen quite badly." "What's your point doctor?" He becomes quite serious. "Demi has lost her memory. It could be temporary or permanent. We're not quite sure of the extent of it. You'll update you again when the surgery is finished. I'm really sorry." He frowns and runs back to the OR.

Nick falls to into a chair with his jaw dropped while I begin to have a nervous breakdown. I've been worrying about this for the past twenty four hours and now my biggest fear has become a reality. Demi doesn't deserve to be going all of this. Not only that, but she won't remember me, Nick, her family, and her own daughter. This truly sucks.
