Chapter 31

Simon's POV

2 days later... Doomsday

    Today is the dreaded day I've heard all about for the past week. It's my 60th birthday. I'm officially six decades old.  God I'm old. I really don't want people to remind me of it like I know they will today. Demi's dragging me to stupid party. I said I'd go for her sake, but it took almost every ounce of pride to just say no. She looked so happy and I couldn't take that away from her. 

    Demi keeps looking back at me as Nick is driving Delilah and us to his place for the party with a goofy but adorable grin. I plaster on a grin for her sake and nod at whatever crap Nick is saying. When he pull into his driveway, the boys of One Direction come toppling onto the car. Nick and Demi's eyes bug out of their heads while Delilah and I just laugh. Their crazy antics never cease to humor me. I run out of the car and hug all of them one by one. "It's so great to see you boys. Congrats on your newest album and declaring a break! You guys deserve it." Niall is the first one to speak. "Thank you sir." Harry jumps out. "What are we still doing standing here? It's your birthday. Let's party!" They all run in with Nick and immediately gorge on the buffet of food that is out. 

     When I say a buffet of food, I mean it. There's everything from burritos to pizza. Demi and Delilah also get excited and go fill their plates with a mountain of food. I'm glad they're enjoying themselves, but I'd give about anything to just be home. I get up from my chair and go into Nick's house to have a moment to myself. My hopes fall when I spot Liam in the kitchen. He pokes his head out from the fridge when he sees me. He reads my face and knows that something is off. 

     "What's on your mind Simon?" I sigh. "You always were able to read me well." I take a shaky breath. "It's wonderful seeing you and the boys again, but I don't really want to be here right now. All I'm hearing is everyone talking about they can't believe that I'm 60 already. No older father wants to constantly be reminded of that. It puts a real damper on my self esteem." Liam furrows in eyebrows in deep thought. "Why don't you tell the others how you feel about this? Honesty may hurt others at times, but it's the best method to get your point across." I scratch my neck. "I don't want to hurt Demi. I've done enough of that lately. She's so happy right now. I mean I've talked to her about it once and I don't want to come off as whiny. "

        Liam pats my knee. "You know what Simon. I'm going to do you a solid. I'll tell the others that you're not feeling well which isn't exactly a lie at the moment. I'll drive you home so you can rest. Does that sound good?" I nearly get down on my hands and knees when he says that. "That would be great. Thank you so much! You guys can drop by later on if you like." He smiles. "Just give me about five minutes. My car is unlocked. Go to it casually and wait for me there." I do what he says and head to his car. When I get to it, I marvel at it. It's a dark blue 2016 Camaro. I wish I had a car like this, but Demi would never approve. It's more of a show car than anything to be honest.

 5 minutes later...

     Liam runs to the car. "How'd they react?" "They were disappointed especially Demi but they seemed to understand. I also asked Demi if we could come by later and she said it was fine. In the meantime, you sir are going to get some rest for a few hours because you look like you haven't slept in days. "Fine I'll sleep. Thank you again for doing me this solid. I owe you one." Liam waves my comment off. "You've done so much for me and the rest of the lads. You don't owe us anything. A ride home is the least I can do. Take care man and see you later." I let myself in, head upstairs, and plop into bed. It doesn't take me long to fall asleep.
