Chapter 38

Demi's POV

 A few days later... Delilah's fifth birthday...

 Today is Delilah's fifth birthday. I've always found it interesting how her birthday is only a few weeks after Simon's. I can't believe our bundle of joy is now half a decade old. I remember when she was just born like it was yesterday. We're currently throwing her birthday party. We invited all of the neighbor kids. I also invited a couple of Nick's little cousins that Delilah is fond of. He said texted me earlier saying he was going to be a few minutes late, but he kept his word about showing up. I notice Simon grow tense when he approaches me. He suddenly steps in front of me. Nick frowns.

    I excuse myself from Nick and pull Simon off to the side. "What was that about? I know you act strange around Nick at times, but you blocking my vision of him is now. Tell me what's going on right now." He sighs. "Nick left a voicemail on your phone the other day that I deleted out of anger." He starts pacing. "He confessed his undying love for you once again, but that's not all. This time is different because he said he didn't care if split up our family and ruined our marriage. You need to cut ties with him Demi. I am not saying this out of jealousy, I am warning you because he is unstable and our family's safety could easily be at risk."

      I step back and look at Simon in shock. Nick looks over in panic and my heart starts racing. "First of all, I can't believe that Nick did that. Second of all, me cutting him out of my life is going to shatter him. I know he's been on edge for a long time, but he's been such a major part of my life. In some way, I'm going to be losing a part of me." Sympathy forms on Simon's face. "I know he's one of your best friends, but it's for the best Demi. If you need help doing it, I'd be more than happy to help." I hug him. "Please, I can't bear to do it myself. It might hurt less coming from you." He kisses my forehead. "I'm on it." 

Simon's POV

  I grab Nick by the arm, drag him through the backyard, through the house, and out to the front yard where we are out of earshot from Demi. I throw Nick to the ground and fire him a menacing look. "I know every word of the voicemail that you left on Demi's phone." His eyes bug out of his head. He stutters. "How d---d-----idd you know about th-aaa-ttt?" I grab his phone out of his pocket and throw it against the garage and watch it shatter to pieces. "I heard it myself the other day and gave you the courtesy of not telling Demi.... until now that is. She's disgusted by you and has every right to be. In fact, you should get out of her life before things get any worse."

       Nick gets up slowly from the ground. "Demi loves me more than she loves you. She would leave you in a heartbeat for me. Plus I actually do love Delilah too so I could easily take her and Demi. I could leave you with nothing." Demi comes around the corner with another shocked expression on her face. "Nick how dare you say that. You are no longer welcome to come over here and I want you out of my life. I watch him get on his hands and knees like the wimp he is. "Please Demi. I'll do anything for you. You know you and I are meant to be together." She pushes him away. "Maybe long ago we were, but that was when we merely teenagers.  You were my best friend and now you're just the shell of the man I thought you were. You're a self destructing monster Nick. I never want to see you again." 

        I silently cheer in my head. I've been wanting Demi to see the truth so long and I'm thrilled that she finally can. I watch Nick break down in tears. "Demi, can you answer one question for me?" She hesitates but nods. "Did Simon put you up to this or are you actually using your own mind to make this decision to get rid of me after we've been through together?" She steps forward and slaps him. "I'm using my own mind asshole. Believe or not I'm capable of making my own decisions. Now leave before I call the cops." At that, he runs for his life to his car and speeds off. Demi and I turn to face each other. I wrap my arms around her. "This may not be complete the end of Nick, but it's the beginning of the end love. I promise." I hold her for a few minutes before we head back to Delilah's party and put our stress on hold temporarily. Our babygirl deserves to enjoy her special day.
