Grace's POV
"No mum. You can't look. Keep your eyes closed" I told my mother while leading her by her hand through the house.
We were almost at the kitchen now. Our kitchen had its own little room in the house away from everything else. This made our house bigger because half of it was kitchen and dining whilst the other half was well....everything else. You entered the kitchen by one of those doors that swings open on its hinges making just the slightest squeaking noise as you pushed it. There was no handle or anything. You just pushed it. It almost reminded me of those old western movies when I guy entered with a gun at a bar. Yes. That kind of door but more modern.
Then in front of the bench was some widows that were just like the door except, they didn't swing back into the original position once it was pushed open. We used this window for handing meals through to our customers. It was our little family business. Only about 5 people worked here. But we didn't mind as much. Not many people come to restaurants that are inside a house.
Especially ones that were red and yellow like McDonalds. Most people preferred to go to McDonalds for that.
This house has been used countless times to host parties and such. It was also always the same people coming over and over again. These people came over so much, that they were almost family now. We knew everyone by name. Even with the families knowing other families.
I pushed the door open to the kitchen and pulled my mum through holding both her hands while I faced her.
"You can open them." I smiled as I let her hands go so that they dropped by her sides.
Her eyes quickly fluttered open before her mouth made an 'O' shape with her mouth. Her eyes went the size of golf balls. which aren't that big...but how wide can you expect a girl to open her eyes anyway? I flung my arms open wide so that they pointed towards her surprise that I made.
"Ta-Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!"
My mother smiled widely at me. Then, out of all things she started jumping up and down.....
Like a fan girl.
So my mother and I have a special relationship, you see. Ever since my dad left us, my mother and I became closer than usual. I had my mother and my best friend Jake as the people I spent my time with. When my dad first left, I was in melt down mode. I wasn't eating or talking to anyone. My friends eventually got annoyed by my "attitude" and left. Great friends I had.
Jake's parents died when he was 7. We had been best friends since, as my mum let him stay with us. His parents used to come to our house for parties all the time so Jake already felt partly at home. That's basically what my mum does for a living. She hosts parties in our house and I must admit, she does one heck of a job at it. So Jake's been staying here for around 10 years now.
Speaking of the devil, he walked into the kitchen, probably startled from my mum's squealing.
'What on earth is g-" He was stopped short when he saw me smiling happily at my mother's reaction. My mother was gawking over the massive trays of decorated cupcakes I made for an 8 year old girls party I told mum I would take care of.
The cupcakes were all dyed so that they were pink, purple, green and blue. The icing on top of the cupcakes was a lighter colour than the cupcake it was on. On the green cupcakes were different types of flowers iced onto them. The pink cupcakes have fairies, purple had castles, and the blue had some random things like wands, crowns, and even magic mushrooms.
Cause they're awesome.
And sparkly.
I must admit though. They look pretty darn good. I would hope so though seeing it took me about 4 hours. An hour each colour that is. Jake clapped his hands slowly in approval to my masterpiece.
"Good job cupcake." I laughed and flicked my brown hair over my shoulder, mocking those girls who do that.
"They do look pretty good if I do so say myself." I smirked.
"They are amazing!" My mother beamed at me. "Mr and Mrs Halloway will be so pleased with how this party is going to have turned out."
"I'm glad you- HEY!" I swatted Jake's hand away from one of the fairy cupcakes he was trying to grab, and scowled at him.
"They're for the party. Not you're hungry needs. Which I might add...is always." I rolled my eyes at him.
"But I want the fairy." He whined like a little kid, and then pouted.
I always found it adorable when he pouted like that. His green eyes seemed to get bigger and they just gleam at me. It is his way of making me say yes to everything. I would say no then- BAM! Pout and puppy eyes go into action.
"Fine. You can have one. But only one!" I told Jake, pointing at him sternly.
"Gracie!" My mother yelled at me as she snatched the cupcake out of Jake's grasp just before he took a bite out of it. His hand is still near his open mouth, as he stood there frozen.
"You two act like children. But you're not. Now out of the kitchen while I store the cupcakes somewhere safe." My mum rushed us out of the kitchen. Jake being pushed behind me. Just before the door closed on us, Jake held it by the top and called out to my mum.
"You act like a teenager Mrs Williams. But you're not." Jake smirked at my mother.
"Jake!"
"You love me!" He called back, as he turned away and headed to the lounge room with me. I chuckled as we proceeded to go sit down on the couch. Though it was more like attacking the couch. Poor thing...
"I see we're acting like monkey's today." Chase commented, as he walked into the room.
Chase is Jake's other best friend. I think Jake would've moved in with Chase if they hadn't become friends two years after he became friends with me. Sometimes they don't let me hang out with them because its "big kid stuff" even though we're only a year difference apart. That's when I turn to Harley and we have our chick flick movie night/day.
"I'm glad you could tell. Now go fetch me my banana." I told Chase.
Chase just walked around to where I was hung over the back of the couch so my face was in the direction of the TV but my head was upside down and my feet were slung over the couch. I saw his face lean into my line of view and he grinned at me.
"Awww. You're face is going red." He poked my cheek.
"That is because my head is upside down you idiot." I put my arms out and he pulled me up. I slightly jumped to the floor and nearly slipped over the recently cleaned floor.
Wait, no. I fell.
I toppled over and landed on top of Chase with a little cry of panic. My face landed onto his hard chest. I just laid there actually finding myself comfortable.
"Going to get off me?" He asked.
"I...fort...ab." My voice was muffled in his shirt.
"You're going to make a fort with my abs?" I could tell he was smirking. I lifted my head up so my voice could be heard this time.
"No you cocky child. I said 'I'm comfortable.'" I corrected him.
"Sure sure." I got off him and sat next to Jake on the couch. Our heads faced the TV as we watched a repeat of How I Met Your Mother.
"Is this what you've been doing all day? Watching TV? Creating square eyes?" When none of us replied he continued. "Come on. I'm taking you out to get some fresh air."
With a lot of reluctance from Jake and I, a pillow fight, and a few deranged bananas all over the floor, we headed out to Harley's house. She walked out the door, tying her golden hair into a high ponytail. She immediately smiled when she fell into sync with our footsteps.
"So where are we going again?" She asked Chase.
"A place where all children find happiness."
