Jake's POV
The fact that Grace had found my aunt still shocked me.
I had been trying to look for someone related to me for years. No offense to Grace and her mum. I loved staying with them but I always just wondered if there was actually someone out there. There had to be right?
My parents had to have some sort of family or friends.
Why would they all disappear when my parents did?
I don't know, it doesn't make sense. I guess I'd find out when I went to see my aunt. I would be able to have all my questions answered.
Though none of these questions would distract from my main issue at the moment.
Grace.
Well, not Grace as in Grace was my issue. More like I had no idea of how I was actually going to protect her. Chris wanted me to give him money and a lot of it.
What scared me even more is that it had been a week already.
There was no way I was letting her out of my sight.
I had gotten into quite a few fights in my life. I wasn't crazy or easily pissed off, I just tried to get people to understand when they're being arrogant assholes. Well, I try to get them to understand before I punch them.
Some people just don't understand the concept of people's feelings.
But anyway, point is that I couldn't just beat Chris up and tell him to back the fuck away from my girlfriend. Instead I have to actual get this money so that he'd get lost finally.
I'm also not a maths genius but I'm pretty sure it doesn't take a genius to figure out how many weeks it'll take me to get him $1000. What does an average teenage guy, well adult now, like me get for working one week after school hours? No more than $100. Now 10 x 100 is 1000 so I'm pretty sure that means that the fact that it's already been the week I was supposed to give Chris the money that I was screwed.
Chris being the jerk he is probably won't accept my plea to wait ten weeks. So I need an alternate plan.
A really good one.
Oh, and Grace can't find out about it. She'll only try to pay for it with me and she's been saving so hard for university. I'm not going to take her money. I've already taken enough of her family's money by living with them for years.
"Jake?" Grace snapped her fingers in front of my face.
I look up from my lunch to see Chase, Harley and Gracie looking at me strangely.
"Sorry." I mumbled, trying to push my earlier thoughts away.
"Harley, Chase and I were just talking about how we should go on a double date this weekend." Gracie smiled at me.
I didn't know how I felt about that. I'd rather just cuddle up on the couch and watch movies, knowing she was safe.
Instead of speaking my thoughts I said, "Where were you thinking?"
"There's that Italian place Grace's mum and Mitch went to. Apparently the pizza there was amazing." Harley told me.
Great. An expensive restaurant was exactly what I needed right now to spend all the money I was saving up for Chris.
But when I looked up at Gracie she looked so hopeful that I would say yes and agree to these plans. I couldn't say no to that face.
"Friday night?" I verified with her.
"Friday night." She nodded her head.
"Okay."
Gracie squealed and threw her arms around me.
"Thank you." She told me.
"Anything for you." I couldn't help but smile back at the massive grin covering her face. "I just have to make sure I'm not working then."
"You got the job?" Chase asked me.
"Yeah man. You're looking at a new bartender." I laughed.
"Your boyfriend is going to turn into a raging alcoholic Grace." Harley joked.
I rolled my eyes. "Totally."
The only reason I even got this job was because apparently I'm a "good looking young fella" who will "bring all the ladies to the bar" which will then bring all the men.
Weird, I know.
"Chase can I talk to you?" Chase nodded and got up and followed me just a bit away from where everyone was.
"What's up?" He asked me.
"I need a favour." I told him, scratching the back of my neck.
I felt like an absolute ass.
"Anything man. Well not anything but you get my gist."
"Could I, if it's cool with you, borrow some money?" I asked.
Chase looked at me weirdly. "What for?"
I sighed. "For Friday."
"Sure. Not that I mind but don't you have some money saved up?"
I looked back over to Harley and Grace but it didn't look like they were trying to listen in on anything.
"I do but I need it to help Grace out." I told him.
I had told Chase everything Chris has done so far. He offered to give me some money but I told him I don't need it and if I did that time wasn't right now.
Chris hadn't done anything to Grace yet and I just wondered what he was waiting for. I don't want him to hurt her but I expected him to have tried something by now.
"How much have you got so far?" Chase asked me.
"About $200." I was nowhere near what I needed.
"I'll pay for dinner." Chase told me. "And you can act like you paid your half if you want too." He laughed.
"Thanks man."
We walked back over to the girls and Gracie immediately looked over to me and took my hand when I sat down.
"Everything okay?" She asked.
I squeezed her hand. "Yeah."
And for now, everything was going to be okay.
