You pushed your sunglasses up your nose, leaning back against the tall, white chair. Your eyes scanned the people below you cautiously, making sure no one was in danger. The sun was incredibly bright today, as well as blistering hot. You wished you could jump down there with everyone else & cool down, but this was your job & you had to make sure everyone was safe.

You had recently become a certified life guard & found a place that needed more life guards. You needed to make some money over the summer to help pay for college in the fall. You planned to do something in the future that involved working with people, so you figured being a life guard would be a great place to start for your future career path. Plus, it paid really well & you needed all the money you could get to be able to afford textbooks & such. Although now, being taunted by all the happy pool-goers while you had to stay up several feet in the air right in the pathway of the boiling hot sun, made you almost regret your decision.

You went back to looking at the kids, smiling fondly. You really loved kids, especially seeing them swim happily with their friends & parents. They were all having a great time, from what you could see, & it made you happy. A lot of them were with their parents, a few with their friends, & one was all alone. The one that was alone was a little girl, flapping her small legs while she was laying on a small pink board, with pink floaties on. She was absolutely adorable & you couldn't believe she was all alone. You scanned the pool one more time before you turned back to look at her. She was laughing at something, or rather, someone. You looked & saw a rather strange looking young man with silver hair & black clothes. He was sitting by the pool, watching the little girl as she laughed. Since the two were closest to you,  you could hear what they were saying.

"Come on, Petey, swim with me!" the little girl yelled.

The silver-haired boy shook his head, "Sorry, kiddo, no can do. I can't afford to get my favorite shirt wet."

You rolled your eyes. What a dork.

The girl just huffed, "You're such a baby, Petey!" you couldn't help but laugh. She was adorable.

"Oh, really now? Well I'll show you, little girl," he removed his metallic jacket that matched his hair, his shoes, & his shirt. You raised an eyebrow. He wasn't very muscular, but he definitely had some tone & definition on him, something you didn't expect. He walked over to the girl & carefully went in, feet first, before he was half submerged. They were only on the shallow end, so the water barely went up to his waist.

The girl squealed & clapped with joy, "Yay, Petey!" she cheered.

He rolled his eyes, "You're lucky you're my sister. I would have never gotten my jeans wet for anyone else," you smiled. It was cute how he was with his sister, especially considering the obvious age gap. He was almost like a fatherly figure to her, & you wondered if maybe they didn't have their father or lived without one, so he was compensating for that by basically being her father.

You did another skim around the pool, still seeing that everyone was okay, before you turned back to the two interesting siblings that caught your attention. You noticed the younger sister was swimming towards the deep end & her brother looking concerned, "Hey, Lorna, don't go over there. The water's too deep!"

She kept paddling, "I'm fine Petey! I'm a big girl; I know how to swim!"

He watched her, biting his lip gently. You watched the girl swim expertly towards the deeper end. She seemed to know exactly what she was doing, so you wondered why he was so worried. Maybe it was a sibling thing. You noticed how siblings who were close tended to be worry-warts about the other, even if they didn't need to be. Or maybe it was his father-like instincts that made him worry. He definitely seemed to have assumed the role of the girl's father, which would be an obvious reason why he'd be so worried.
