                              -----------------------------------------------------
You were completely & utterly exhausted. Your ears had started ringing a little over an hour ago as your baby daughter continued to scream & wail loudly enough to wake up the dead. She had been crying nonstop since your fiancé, Evan, had left for work. You tried everything: feeding her, changing her diaper, giving her a bath, rocking her, singing to her, Hell, you even tried making silly faces at her, but nothing was working. If anything, all your efforts just seemed to be making her cries worse.
At this point, your head was pounding with an insanely strong headache as you rocked your daughter & patted her back. You were aimlessly pacing around the living room, hoping all the movement would tire her out, but it didn't. You wanted to burst into tears yourself & turn this into a giant crying party because you were so fed up & tired. It was nearly midnight now & Evan was due back home any minute, probably not expecting his daughter to be yelling while his exhausted fiancé was about to keel over.
You sighed as you continued to rock your daughter, trying to keep it together, "Charlotte, please stop crying," you pleaded, but that only seemed to make her even more upset. You groaned & continued to cradle & rock her desperately, internally begging that she would just tire herself out & stop. You did your best to keep her away from your ears in an attempt to cease the ringing, but even so, her bellows were still defeaning.
Finally, you had had enough & gave up on trying to make her stop. You went upstairs & carefully placed her in her crib, gently returning her pacifier into her mouth. She spit it out almost immediately & continued to cry. You pressed a hand to your forehead, massaging the skin gently before you sighed. You left the nursery & went back downstairs. Your stomach was growling since you weren't able to eat all day due to your sobbing daughter, so you hastily prepared something to scarf down. Charlotte's cries could still be clearly heard from downstairs but you tried your best not to listen to them too much. You took some headache medication & went to go lie down on the couch.
When it was nearly one in the morning, Evan finally came home. He burst through the door with a surprising amount of energy, as if it wasn't so late in the night. He immediately heard his daughter's cries & started to go upstairs to see what the problem was, but he stopped when he saw you on the couch, your face contorted in pain.
He dropped his things by the door & immediately made his way over to you. He crouched down by the couch & gently brushed your hair out of your face, "Hey, are you okay? You don't look so good."
You cautiously sat up, running a hand through your hair as you sighed, "Charlotte's been crying ever since you left & I can't get her to stop," he looked at you sympathetically & gently cupped your face with his hand. You nuzzled into his hand, pressing a faint kiss to his palm.
He leaned over & gently kissed your forehead, "Let me go try & calm her down. You just stay here & rest, okay?" you nodded & he kissed you softly before he got back up & made his way upstairs towards the nursery. Charlotte's cries continued to resonate throughout the house for several moments until finally, she stopped.
"You've got to be kidding me," you got up angrily & curiously, wondering what the Hell Evan could have done to calm her down so quickly.
You made your way upstairs into the nursery & saw Evan, rocking Charlotte gently as he smiled down at her & spoke quietly, "You gave Mom a lot of trouble today, young lady," he said, her brown eyes blinking & watching him with intense curiosity, "You're going to be a real handful, aren't you? You need to give Mom a break every now & then, okay? She works so very hard to make sure Dad can do what he loves & that you can have a great life," he kissed her forehead gently, "Be good to her because we're both very lucky to have her," you smiled softly at his words, blushing faintly. You quietly walked into the nursery, but Evan noticed you almost immediately. He turned to look at you, cradling Charlotte close, "I thought I told you to stay downstairs."
"I know you did, but I wanted to see what you did to calm her down."
He laughed softly, "I have no idea what I did! I just picked her up & she stopped instantly."
You felt a pang of jealousy rise within you, but you pushed it away, putting on a smile, "She must have missed you a lot."
"I guess so," you watched him as he started to rock her, her eyes beginning to close. He continued rocking her until she finally fell asleep. Carefully, he set her back down in her crib, kissed her head, & gently tucked her in before he turned his attention back to you. He pulled you into his chest, holding your body close to his as he brushed your hair behind your ears, "I missed you, so much," he murmured.
"I missed you, too," he leaned down & kissed you & you hesitantly returned the kiss. You enjoyed the affection, but you were just so exhausted & slightly jealous that you weren't really in the mood.
Evan, of course, sensed this & immediately pulled away, "Is everything okay?"
You gave him a small smile, "Yeah, I'm just tired."
He pouted softly, not buying it, "Talk to me; what's the matter?"
You sighed & gave in, "I'm just...frustrated. I spent all day trying to calm her down & get her to stop crying, but nothing worked. Then, the minute you come home she just stops. I don't get it. It makes me feel like she doesn't love me or that I'm a bad mother."
He cupped your face with both hands & you looked at him, "You are not a bad mom & I know for a fact that Charlotte loves you just as much as she loves me. This is just as foreign to her as it is to us. She's not used to seeing two people around her all the time," he smiled, "She'll come around, don't worry," he let go of your face & hugged you once more, kissing your head.
You returned his embrace, "You're right, I'm sorry. I'm just so tired..."
"Let's go to bed, then," you nodded & the two of you walked to the bedroom you shared. You literally jumped into bed & got under the covers, causing Evan to laugh. He joined you & you immediately snuggled into his chest. He kissed your head & buried his face in your hair, "I love you, future Mrs. Peters."
You grinned against his chest, "I love you, too."
