This is dedicated to all of us who's 2016 wasn't as great as we had hoped. May 2017 be a much better year, filled with acceptance, love, forgiveness, strength, friendship, & validation because the year is changing, but that doesn't mean we have to change ourselves, too.
------------------------------------------------------
New Year's is a bunch of bullshit. Another couple-centered holiday that made all the rest of us not in relationships feel unwanted & alone. Sure, you were celebrating leaving this year behind & embracing the new year, but what's the point when you know it all ends up the same as last year, full of uncompleted resolutions & broken promises?
At least, that's what she thought as she pushed her way through the obnoxious crowd. She just wanted to drown the night away with a bottle of vodka & her middle finger cocked towards the sky. Fuck 2016, fuck New Year's, fuck everything.
But, of course, she couldn't just walk over to her local grocery store & pick up a cheap bottle of alcohol without a curve ball of catastrophic proportions. As she was leaving the store, her signature bottle to drown in close in tow, a large crowd of people had gathered near her apartment complex across the street. She groaned as she realized they were part of the large group of idiots who were getting ready to countdown to the new year. Unfortunately, there was no way to avoid the crowd & she knew she had no choice but to somehow pass through the throng of partiers.
Ross wasn't really putting the "part" in party, considering he wasn't celebrating the new year. To him, 2016 was just another tally mark to add to his chalkboard of failures & 2017 was another impending failure. He wanted to be successful, like his sister: to go to college, have a steady & well-paying job, & find himself a woman he could date & eventually, settle down with. Instead, all he was good at was smoking & being a loser. At least, that's what he thought.
Knowing that next year would be no different, Ross couldn't help but join in on the festivities, mostly for the cheap alcohol & getting the chance to get out of his cooped up apartment. He was already nearly drunk out of his mind, his brain starting to get a little foggy, but he was still able to successfully spot his neighbor across the street, looking at the crowd with a disgusted look on her face.
Ross didn't even know her name, but he knew that she would never go for a guy like him. She was a complete & utter bad ass & her worn out leather jacket & scuffed work boots spelled that out as clear as day. He had only talked to her a few times, but even from those limited conversations, he knew he liked her. She was just so different from him; he was shy, kind, & scared out of his mind. He couldn't talk to people easily, not even on the phone, & constantly feared being ridiculed. He had been called a loser & an idiot for most of his life & he couldn't bear to hear those names anymore, especially if she said them to him. He would be devastated, although not surprised. She was at least going to college & trying to make something of herself, while he just stayed at home, playing video games & smoking all day.
As she crossed the street & came closer to him, he could see her Van Halen tee under her jacket & the dark circles under her eyes. She wasn't wearing her make-up, but Ross was still stunned by her beauty. He had never seen her without her signature winged eyeliner & the dark line of eyeliner on her lower lid that connected just where the wing met. It made her have a very feline-like appearance & Ross couldn't help but wonder if she had a thing for cats. She had beautifully sculpted eyebrows, the kind that looked emaculate when they moved with each facial expression. She had a habit of raising one eyebrow, either in a sassy or shocked manner. He had seen this expression on her several times, especially when she was lost in her thoughts. It was almost as if she was raising her eyebrow at herself, as if she was disbelieving of her own situation. Regardless the reason, all Ross knew was that her eyebrows looked amazing, especially when she used them to express her emotions.
