"Mommy! Can I have some sprinkles?" she smiled fondly at her precious son, his face covered in chocolate ice cream. She grabbed a napkin & wiped it off his face, ignoring his facial expressions of distaste.
"Of course, do you want me to get them?"
He shook his head, his deep brown eyes boring into her soft honey ones, "No, I can get them! I'm a big boy!"
She laughed, "That's right, you are a big boy! Okay, go ahead, but don't spill any," she watched as her son scooted out of the small booth, grabbing his ice cream & waddling over to the toppings station. She kept a close eye on him, not looking away for a second. If she had, she would have noticed a familiar face walk into the shop. Instead, she saw her son struggle to reach the sprinkles, "Do you need some help?"
"No Mommy, I'm a big boy!" she sighed but smiled, watching him as he tried to reach over & grab the sprinkles. A man who had just purchased his ice cream walked over to the toppings station. He watched the little boy struggle to grab the sprinkles & it made him smile. He secretly had the biggest soft spot for kids, although nobody knew. Well, nobody except for the love of his life, who he hadn't seen in so many years. He had only known her for a few months, slept with her once, & never saw her again. He regretted not waking up just ten minutes sooner that morning that she disappeared, every day.
After watching the cute little boy struggle for several moments, he chuckled, "Here, let me get that for you," he reached over & grabbed the sprinkles, pouring them on his ice cream, "There you go, little guy."
"Thank you, Mister!" he said, giving him a toothy grin before shuffling off. He smiled as he watched the boy walk over to a booth near the entrance of the ice cream shop & sat down next to a woman who he presumed was the boy's mother. He didn't think much of it & turned back to the toppings station. As he did so, he noticed a little toy car was there & he smiled again. He put some toppings on his ice cream before he picked up the toy & made his way over to where the boy & his mother were sitting.
He gently set the toy down in front of the boy & both he & his mother looked up at him, "I think you left this over by the sprinkles," he said.
The boy gasped & quickly grabbed the car, hugging it to his chest, "Thank you, Mister!" he said again.
He laughed, "Please, call me Evan," & that was what caught her attention. She didn't recognize him at first because the last time she saw him, his curls were blonde. Now, his natural brown curls were displayed, bringing out his dark brown eyes, the same ones Thomas had. All those details, plus the mention of his name, was what connected all the pieces.
"Evan?" she breathed. Evan was smiling at the boy, but at the mention of his name, he turned, & the smile fell right off his face. His expression contorted into one of complete shock as he stared incredulously at the mother.
"Blake?" he said, "Oh my God..." he couldn't believe it. After nearly five years, he had found the love of his life...& her child. His heart stung at the thought of her being a mother to someone else's child & a wife to someone else. His eyes quickly darted to her left hand, sighing with relief when he saw no ring. He looked back up at her & swallowed, "Do you mind if I sit here?" he asked, looking at her desperately.
Her heart was racing a million miles a minute. The one man she truly loved & lost some five years ago was actually here, right before her. She regretted leaving that morning every day since it happened, but now, all she could focus on was the fact that he was here, "No, I don't mind," she turned to her son, "Do you mind if Evan sits with us, Thomas?"
He shook his head, "No, Mommy, can he sit with us? Please?"
She smiled & Evan's heart skipped a beat, glad that the boy was already so approving & loving of him, "Of course he can," he immediately sat down next to Thomas, his ice cream long forgotten.
