Once his brain flooded with consciousness & he felt his mind wake up, he slowly opened his eyes. He blinked a few times: open, shut, open, shut, open, shut, until he finally opened them completely. He was blessed with the beautiful view of his girlfriend beside him, her face one of peace, her hair a disheveled mess, & her hands tucked underneath her head & pillow. She was always a cute sleeper & he loved the rare times he woke up before her because he got to catch a glimpse of her like this, as she slept.

He let a smile slowly grace his features as he admired her for a moment. They had known each other since he was thirteen & she fifteen. He saw her as a role model to him & truthfully, he still did, but now, he saw her as more than just someone to look up to. She was someone he strived to be; someone he really loved.

It took both of them nearly thirteen years of their friendship for them to realize that they both wanted something more, but as she liked to remind him, "Better late than never" & he was just glad that it did finally happen.

The couple had recently moved in together, after dating for just over three years. She had moved into his lavish apartment, mostly because she knew Evan would have an easier time adjusting to the foreign & strange situation if it happened under his own roof, where he felt most comfortable. Of course, she knew he would have never allowed her to make such a drastic decision just with him in mind, so she told him that she was looking forward to a new place & a new start, which wasn't exactly a lie. She had grown tired of her old place & neighborhood, never having really felt like she belonged there, but she felt as if she belonged here because of him. Wherever he was was where she would be, too, & that's always where she felt she belonged.

Evan carefully got out of bed, so as not to wake her, & pulled on his warm, favorite pair of slippers before he began shuffling downstairs towards the kitchen. He yawned quietly as he dug in the cupboard for the coffee container. Grabbing the metal tin, he shut the cupboard & set up the coffee maker before starting it. He took out two mugs & set them aside the coffee maker as he grabbed the tea kettle, pouring in some water from the tap before putting the metal kettle onto the stove & turning it on.

He loved coffee, but she always preferred tea. She didn't like the bitterness of the beans & the awkward aftertaste it left behind on her tastebuds, but she loved the warmth & sweetness of tea. She had a cup of tea every morning & whenever they went out to coffee shops, she always got tea. Over the span of their relationship, Evan noticed her flavor preference was seasonal. In the Spring, she drank tangy & berry teas, like blackberry. During the Summer, she preferred Green Tea & Black Tea, especially alongside some lemonade. In the Fall, she loved Chamomile & other herb teas. Finally, during the Winter, she consumed extensive amounts of her favorite tea: peppermint. She absolutely loved peppermint tea the most because of the strong flavor & soothing scent. It always woke her up, more than any cup of joe could.

As he waited for the coffee to brew & the kettle to heat up, Evan couldn't help but smile. There was a lot to love about her: her compassionate & empathetic nature, her wandering & flamboyant spirit, her rationalism & contradictory style choices, & most of all, her desire to give acceptance & respect to everyone. She accepted him instantly when they first met & never stopped accepting him, even when he messed up & needed help getting back up onto his feet. She was incredibly forgiving, perhaps to forgiving, but she didn't mind getting hurt if it meant that someone else could be happy. She would sacrifice her happiness for anyone, but especially for him.

The screeching of the kettle startled him, its abruptness seemingly coming out of nowhere. He turned off the stove & coffee maker, pouring himself a mug of coffee before he added his usual excess amounts of cream & sugar. He grabbed a packet of peppermint leaves & dropped it into the other mug he designated for her, carefully pouring the hot water in afterwards. Adding her standard two-sugar-cubes-&-a-spoonful-of-honey mixture, he spun the spoon, sloshing the ingredients all together into a warm concoction of her favorite Winter drink.

Evan then grabbed both mugs, cautiously making his way back to the bedroom to great his now sure to be awake girlfriend, but paused as his eyes aimlessly drifted towards the large, almost foreign object in his living room: her grand piano.

It was a hand-me-down from her great grandfather & she cherished it dearly. She had even let Evan stroke the yellowed & worn out keys when she used to teach him to play over a decade ago.

He smiled to himself & made his way over to old beauty, carefully setting the mugs down on top of it. He sat down in the small chair, letting his fingers softly trace the keys, refamiliarizing himself with them. It had been years since she stopped teaching him & it had been even longer since he stopped playing altogether. He was never very good to begin with, having trouble focusing & reading the sheet music while trying to play at the same time, but he loved the peace & beauty he could bring with a simple yet graceful movement of his fingertips, even when he slipped up.

He took a deep breath before he tentatively pressed a random key, his ears picking up the resonating note immediately: C#. Slowly, but surely, he pressed another key (B) & another (C#) & another (D). It took him a moment, but he recognized the song as Arabesque #1, a favorite one of hers she spent months trying to teach him, but never fully succeeded.

He didn't remember very much of the song, other than a portion of the introduction, but he played as much as he could remember. He was pretty surprised by how much he did remember & was able to play, considering it had been over a decade since she taught him.

As she trotted down the stairs, the sound of her piano gradually became louder, causing her to furrow her eyebrows in confusion. She figured she was still a bit out of it since she just woke up, but as the sound grew louder & louder, she began to realize that it wasn't a figment of her imagination. She peered confusedly into the living room & the smile that broke out onto her face was big enough to stretch to the moon in back.

She watched in glee as Evan played one of her favorite classical songs on her most valuable piano. She knew he bad stopped playing when he turned fifteen & moved to California to pursue acting, so she was so pleased to see he still remembered & knew how to play. She also knew how difficult the song was for him, & yet, he was playing it so well right now.

Leaning against the door frame, she smiled to herself as he finished playing, smiling to himself a little. She clapped as he did so & he jumped a bit in surprise looking up to find her watching him. He blushed furiously, but relaxed after realizing it was her, "Bravo!" she cheered as she went to join him. Noticing the tea on top of the piano, she grinned & picked it up, sneaking a sip before sitting down on the little piano seat beside him, "Peppermint tea & a serenade? Are you proposing?" she joked.

He grinned cheekily, "Not yet."

She rose her eyebrows & hid her blush behind her mug as she took another sip.

He pressed a kiss to her burning cheek as she set the mug back down before she cracked her fingers & began to play. Evan smiled as he watched her talented fingers play each note perfectly & effortlessly, entirely mesmerized by her skill.

She smiled & nodded at him to join her, ushering him to play along with her. He shyly did so, knowing he wasn't nearly as good as she was, but he was proud of the way he played nonetheless. She, too, was just as proud of him for not only how he played, but also of the successfulness of his career. He had worked incredibly hard his entire life to get to where he was & she was so happy to see all that work finally paying off.

They finished their little piano duet before Evan gently pulled her into a soft hug, making her laugh as she returned his embrace, "You're being extra affectionate today."

"I'm just really cold," he joked, eliciting another laugh from her. He smiled & relaxed into her touch, pulling her impossibly closer as he nudged his nose against her cheek. She turned to face him & he immediately pressed a tentative kiss to her lips, which she graciously & eagerly returned. He held her close & continued kiss her & she continued to return all his kisses & affection.

When he pulled away, he didn't move far as he mumbled against her lips, "Good morning."

She just laughed.
