Chapter 19// Jackson the Cashier

After Ben drove us home it was 11:30ish
so he went home and I went to bed.
"How was your time at the movies with Ben Rey?" Papa asked smiling and lifting his eyebrows.
"It's was awesome papa." I say laughing at the attempt of lift my eyebrows.
"Goodnight dear." He says going into his bedroom. It was way past his bedtime so he had to go to bed.
"Goodnight Papa."
I go upstairs and put my bag on my bed.
I pull off my clothes from today and out on nice soft pajamas.
I get into bed and roll up in the covers but when I roll over I heard something crunch beneath me.
I see what the crunching was and saw that it was a piece of paper.
I open the paper and see its a note. From Ben.
Dear Rey,
Meet me at my house around 1:00 for a special treat.
Love Ben.
What was this surprise Ben was talking about? Weirdo.
"Rey can you come to the grocery with me?" I heard Papa yell up stairs.
"Yeah of course." I say running down the stairs.
I slip on my shoes and head out the door with Papa.
We get into the car and drive to the store.
"I'll be right back I promise." I say exiting the car and walking into the store with the shopping list.
Papa always stayed in the car when we went to store. I should make one of those signs for dogs in the car alone that says,
"The AC is on. He's listening to his favorite and has water. Do not break window." That would be cute.
I look down at this list and read down it.
"Milk. Bread. Juice. Cereal." The usual I mumble to myself.
I walk to the bread aisle which was right next to the cereal aisle. Convenient.
I scan the shelves up and down for the right bread.
"Ah here it is." I say grabbing the bread and placing it in the basket.
"Next cereal." I say walking into the next aisle.
As I turned the corner of the next aisle I saw a woman with a baby. The cutest baby in the universe. All babies were cute but this baby was be far the cutest.
Little baby hands and the softest smile.
I waved a little and smiled. The baby laughed so hard and flailed it's arms.
So cute! But I never noticed the guy I was walking right into.
I turn around and fall back ward.
"Hey watch it!" I say standing back up putting the bread back in the basket.
Then I see a boy in an employee uniform with boxes scattered all around.
"Oh my god I am so sorry!" He says extending his hand to help me up.
I take the offer and hop back up.
"No it's not your fault. I wasn't looking were I was going." I say awkwardly.
I glance down at his name tag which read "Jackson" in big red letters.
"I'm Rey. By the way." I say reaching out my hand. He takes hand and shakes it.
"Nice to meet you Rey. I'm Jackson." He says pointing to his name tag making me laugh.
"I have to go but it was a pleasure to meet you." I say walking in the opposite direction. Why I am so awkward?!
I gather the rest of things on the list and make my way to the checkout.
When I was walking to the checkout I passed the candy aisle and saw Sour Patch Kids and thought of Ben.
I grabbed some and plopped them in the basket.
I entered checkout station 14 and started to place the items on the conveyer belt.
I grabbed the money that Papa gave me to pay with out of my pocket and placed down the basket on the floor.
"Hey Rey." The boy at the cash register says.
"Hey Jackson." I say looking up and seeing the boy I knocked over earlier.
"Did you find everything ok?" He says sarcastically.
"Yes thank you." I say back.
"That'll be 12.50." He says looking at the screen with the total.
"Here you go." I say handing him a twenty.
"Hey so this is going to sound super weird but do you want to hang out some time maybe. Like you know tomorrow." He says blushing and handing me my change.
"I can't tomorrow but I can give you my number and I can text you when I'm free." I say writing my phone number on a piece of paper and handing it to him.
"Ok thanks." He says smiling.
I grab my bags and walk to the car.
"Hey Rey. Everything go ok?" Papa asks as I plop down on the seat.
"Yeah. Really weird trip though." I say chuckling.
"What do you mean?" Papa asks.
Bens going to be so jealous.
