The Mageia high school bell rings throughout the many hall ways. Classes begin and any child left in the hallway runs towards their class, to begin this year’s mixed aged classes.
It is the first day of school. Blue rushes through the hall way, searching for her class with her new teacher, Mrs. Bloom. She reaches the door, and stares at it nervously.
Every year is like this for Blue, nervous on the first day and sits alone for the rest of the year. I have to make things different. She thinks to herself like she does every other year and opens the door, walking into the crowded class room.
“Okay class. Welcome. As you all know I am your teacher for this entire year, Mrs. Bloom.” Mrs. Bloom starts.
Blue sits down in an empty seat near the back and looks up at Mrs. Bloom as she continues to speak.
“Now, I am told that I have to remind you all that this year is our mixed aged class, like we have it every two years. So please don’t feel like you are in the wrong class.” Mrs. Bloom says eying everyone in the class room. “Before we start class, let’s get to know everyone.”
Blue watches as an older girl with long amber hair raises her hand. She wears an orange shirt, a skirt with a similar color to her hair, and light brown boots.
“Yes Amber?” Mrs. Bloom asks. So her names Amber, Blue thinks.
“Mrs. Bloom, we do this every single year. Introduce ourselves to the same group of kids. You knew my name without even asking me, so why do we have to do this? Plus, nearly everyone in this entire school knows who I am.” She says.
Mrs. Bloom sighs shaking her head and walks over to her desk. “I know Amber, but there are new students in the school, like every single year. And I suggest you be quiet, and speak when you’re allowed to. You don’t want to get detention on the first day now, do you?” Mrs. Bloom said.
“No Mrs. Bloom.” She mopes and slumps in her seat. “I’m sorry.” She mumbles.
Mrs. Bloom nods and looks over at Blue. She then looks away and walks up to the front of the class. “Okay, so, let’s start by having a student come up to the front of the class, and tell us a little bit about their selves.” She smiles looking around the class and then she looks right at Blue. “Blue, would you like to go first?” She asks sitting down on her desk.
Blue bites her lip. She has no choice, because it isn’t a question. So what if she asked it like a question, you can’t say no to a teacher. She nervously gets up from her desk and walks over to the front of the class.
She looks around as butterflies start to fill her stomach. “Um, hi,” She stutters beginning to speak. She doesn’t like to speak if front of people, only to one individual person at the most, maybe even two. “My, um, name is, um…Blue Cornwall. I am, uh, ten years old and, um, I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. My uh…um, my mother and I always go on picnics whenever we are um, together. I live in a small town, near the, um, city.” She looks at her teacher, shaking her leg up and down quickly, unable to stand still.
“Anything else you want to tell us?” Mrs. Bloom asks pressuring Blue.
Blue shakes her head, “Um…n-no. No thank you, I’m do-done t-t-talking.” She stutters and looks down on the floor.
The class looks at her, and some giggle. Blue quickly walks back to her seat and sits down. She takes breaths to calm down and avoids looking at anyone who is already looking at her.
