I go to bed earlier than I've probably ever gone (not counting my childhood years), but I still sleep almost the entire morning away. I groggily emerge from the bedroom and find the sofa empty, as usual. I quickly put some clothes on—almost falling over from sleep drunkenness—and head over to Elija's apartment. As I open the door, I'm surprised to see not only Elija and Gray inside, but Mikael too. There's some kind of tension in the air, but I'm not sure why. All three of them are busy working on something and Gray is the first to look up. I raise my eyebrow at him in question and he shrugs with a similarly puzzled look. Alright then.
I walk over to the kitchen cupboards and try to find something to eat. There's a bag of cornflakes and the moment the cupboard closes with a bang, both Elija and Mikky look up in surprise. They smile at me as a greeting and then look down at their books again, moving almost simultaneously, like conjoined twins.
My gaze automatically shifts to Gray again, but he still seems to be just as clueless. I shake my head, grabbing a bowl to put the food in, and take it to the sofa to sit down in between the twins. "When did you get home, Mikael?"
"Last night," he answers.
"Why didn't you stay over?"
"Sigge was annoying the shit out of me," he explains. "By the way! Gray, you didn't tell me he's with Estelle."
"Are Sigge and Estelle together?" Gray asks.
"She didn't tell you, either? Pfft, kids don't tell us anything these days."
"You sound like an old man," Elija remarks drily, not looking up from his books.
"Did you know?" Mikael asks him and he replies, "No."
"Then why are you acting like you don't give a fuck?"
"Because I don't."
Mikael shrugs nonchalantly, and returns to his work as well, eyes and pen back back to the books, like he wasn't just about to start an argument with Elija. That's a first.
"You guys are being weird," I say.
"What? We're being perfectly normal," Elija argues with a frown.
"Exactly! You were constantly at each other's throats and now you're all buddy buddy again." I narrow my eyes at them and realize, "Something happened."
"Why did something have to happen?" Mikael says. "We just made up, put our differences aside, shook hands, no hard feelings, you know the deal."
"That's not how you guys work," Gray argues. "It was too sudden."
"We're fine," Elija grunts. "Accept it."
I let it go and then intentionally slurp my milk obnoxiously loud, to make them both look up at me with annoyance. I only grin at them in return. "What are you working on anyway?"
