Part 3

Words: 1800

The road to lillika was long and rough, taking you over many luscious green hills and around numerous sky-high mountains. The occasional jolt where the wheels of the carriage fell in a dip kept you from sleeping at night. On your third day you had finally acclimatised to the conditions you were staying in. in the early morning you were woken by the horses outside your carriage suddenly halting. You sat upright, your forehead creasing as you frowned. Inga hadn't stirred from her sleep, instead she rolled over, pulling the linen sheets over to her side. You crept towards the door of the carriage, hearing two voices speaking calmly to each other. One you had identified as your driver, the other you had never heard before. You unhinged the door and pushed it open slightly so you could peek out, careful to not make it squeak. The man was stood by the side of the driver's seat, a stern look on his face. He was carrying a large sword, sharp enough to slice a whole body in half. You could only hear murmurs now, and then the man did something surprising, he walked almost sideways and opened the carriage door, revealing you eavesdropping on the other side. You thought the man was going to start shouting but instead he chuckled.

"You must be lady Y/N. it's a pleasure to meet you ma'am." Your jaw hung slightly, you had never thought about being called lady and the title felt odd to you. You gave a quick hello, before turning your attention to your driver.

"This is alber, he's going to be your personal guard for the duration of the remaining journey." You were weary of this stranger, yet he wore the crest of the house ronse, the royal family of lillika. It made sense that they would send a guard to protect the future queen of lillika, yet you had hoped for a more comfortable carriage instead.

And so your journey continued, considerably more cramped than before. But the air changed as you travelled through the country, it seemed more crisp and fresher, like a garden after a rain shower. You inhaled the cool air into your lungs as you sat at the front of the carriage, alber to your right and Inga to your left. The sun danced in the sky and you felt its warm glow on your skin. You smiled to yourself, wondering if you may enjoy your time here.

"Over there" alber pointed towards a lively town rising up in the distance. You could see many lights flickering in the windows of townhouses, and as you approached you started to hear the clap of hooves on the cobbled streets.

"Where is the castle?" you asked, slightly confused. You had expected the castle to be a part of the town, so the workers can travel from their homes easily. You raised this matter with Inga.

"the workers stay in the castle" she replied and although this concept was new to you, you admired it, it allowed less wealthy families to not worry about rent, to give them protection from rain and a shelter from the cold. Maybe the king and queen were kinder than you imagined.

You continued forward into the town. Along the way, villagers lined the streets, waving and cheering when they saw you. You smiled and waved at the people you would eventually rule over.

"The people have been waiting a long time for your arrival" alber whispered "including the king and queen of lillika."

You passed multiple taverns and inns and luscious shops on your journey through town. It was larger than you had imagined and took a fair amount of time to travel through. Once the town was behind you, you were again surrounded by forest, sheltering the castle that arose from the trees. You thought about a castle in the middle of the woods, and smiled at the possible privacy you would have here. However your horses continued their gallop and the castle grew larger and larger.

The castle was surrounded by an accident, grey brick wall, at least three metres high. The walls of the castle were built hundreds of years ago, making lillika castle the longest standing castle in all of the land. Stern looking Guards were stationed every so often and two heavy black gates opened upon your arrival. Behind the walls looked like a completely different land. Green gardens spiralled in patterns, vibrant, exotic flowers bloomed from every border and a large, clear lake glistened in the light of the sun. The castle was grey, made of the same strong stone as the castle walls, at least eight floors high. The gravelled path you were following circled around and you were met with many curious faces.
