You and Theo both glanced at each other. The light entering through the window cast panels throughout the room.
"Can you repeat that?" you asked, not comprehending what she had said, while Theo stood up to get her a glass of water. The woman rolled onto her side as the sound of the rusty pipes echoed in the room. She tried sitting up again before she spoke.
"The mountain came to life. The stones deformed and moved like bones cracking into the shape of mankind. The mountain glowed orange, as if it was burning, yet it was so cold. There was nothing any of us could do. We couldn't contain her." Theo came back with the drink, holding it up to her lips to soothe her throat.
"Who was she? This 'her' you're talking about" he questioned, setting down the glass onto the oak bedside table. The woman looked away, taking a deep breath, you scanned her features, her pale white, hollowed cheeks indicating starvation, the dark rings around her eyes showing how little sleep she had had.
"You need to find the others, they hid. I don't know why she followed me. Maybe because I was the closest to them, the one they trusted, maybe because I held the most hatred for what she destroyed."
Theo asked her many more questions, yet she refused to speak, saying it would bring the curse down on this town. After a while, you and Theo went to speak to the doctor, who agreed she should stay in bed a few days to regain strength. You got up to leave, waving goodbye, promising her you'd visit again. On the journey home intrusive thoughts about what she had said plagued your mind, something inside you was deeply troubled, and you couldn't shake the feeling that this was all too familiar.
Getting back into the castle was a lot harder than getting out. It had been a few hours since you left and nobody had seen you about the castle. Suspicions had grown and you even overheard some ladies maids telling tales of you running off with some of the lords. Once inside, you kept your head down and found the room containing your clothes.
"I'll leave you to get ready" Theo nodded, exiting to get changed himself. You removed the overall and shirt, slipping the shoes off your feet. Hastily, not wanting to get caught like this, you threw your dress over your head, wrestling with the many layers of fabric. Once you had it on, you fiddled around with the lace, but couldn't tie it up. Putting your shoes on, you walked over to the door, your fingers gripping the dress together so it didn't fall down. Opening the door, you looked around, yet there was no sign of any maids who you could ask for help. You retracted back into the room slightly when you heard footsteps coming your way. Feeling bold, you peered around the door frame further, making eye contact with Theo who was headed your way.
"You ready to go, we should get you upstairs" he stated, looking over at your arm which was holding the fabric up against your back.
"Not exactly, could you help me tie my dress up" you asked shyly, wondering if he even knew how to tie a dress up. He slid into the room, shutting the door behind him while you walked towards the back and turned around. He didn't say a word as he walked over to you, taking the material in his hands. You felt his fingers dance across your skin and you were immediately aware of the close proximity between you. The heat radiating from his body caused you to lean back slightly, His breath now tickling your ear.
"finished." He uttered, his hands on your hips.
"Hmm? Oh... thank you" you were promptly awoken from his spell, not fully hearing what he had said. Theo took a step back, letting you throw your shawl around your shoulders and wrap your new scarf around your neck. You daren't look at him, your heart racing way too fast. Feeling his eyes on you, you proceeded to open the door again a hand shot out and held it shut as your fingers brushed the handle. You swivelled round on the spot, leaning back against the wood as Theo stood in front of you. His eyes skimmed across your features to your mouth. He leant in, prompting you to tilt your head upwards. But his lips grazed your cheek instead.
"I wish we had spent the day differently, but as long as it was spent with you, I'm happy. Just send for me next time you need help with your clothes, particularly if you're removing them." You angled your face near his so that he could hear your response.
"I had a surprisingly good time despite the events. Anyway, if I was removing my clothes, I'd be calling my fiancé for help." You mocked eager to keep up the charade as you knew the castle walls had ears. Turning the door handle behind you, you walked out of the room, leaving Theo behind you.
