Part 8

Words: 1132

There was a war inside you. You were upset at everything that had happened, but another part of you felt relieved. What if this meant you didn't have to marry the prince. In one and a half days you had already seen life here, and you missed your uncle's house. If stiles wanted to marry the woman he loved, there would be no reason for you to be held here.

Your train of thought was disturbed by a cough behind you. You turned around, the loose strands in your braid falling out as the wind blew, slamming the doors to the balcony. In front of you was Prince Theo

"Are you ok princess y/n? I couldn't help but see you with your head in your hands." You smiled at him, turning back slightly so you could still rest your arms on the wall. His concerned look never faltered, only being carved deeper in his face at your hesitation to answer.

"I don't know if I'm ok. And, if you excuse my informalities, I have never heard such rubbish. In order to see me with my head down, you would've had to have been outside." He smiled back, shaking his head, his teeth scrapping his lip, as if he was tempted to bite it.

"You caught me. I saw you practically running through the castle and couldn't resist following you out here." the concern was now disguised under a cheeky smirk, one not too dissimilar to the one he had given you in the throne room.

"Oh it's not princess y/n... its lady y/n." you clarified. He frowned and came to stand next to you.

"I've never heard such rubbish." He mocked your previous sentence. "Your parents were royals. That makes you a royal. People here will always try to undermine your power. Don't listen to them. Now tell me, what is troubling a stunning woman like you?" you weren't in the mood for flattery, but something about his words delighted you.

"I'm forced to marry a man, I only just met, in a weeks' time and I feel like he doesn't feel anything for me. I wouldn't expect him too, but he seemed like he was trying but it was all a cover. This isn't how I imagined my life."

"Sounds intriguing. I'm guessing you're talking about Lydia" you looked at him surprised but his expression hardly changed. "They have been sneaking around the castle for a long time. He even got her the position of being your maid, before that she worked in the kitchens. Stiles and I used to be friends. We fell out when I tried to convince him that the relationship with Lydia was poisonous. He took it as a betrayal. A backstabbing if you will. That's what he tells everyone at least. But I don't trust her. He's willing to give up everything and she is willing to give up nothing. I think she's just in it for the luxuries a life like ours can provide"

"I'm so sorry. He did tell me you were backstabbing but I can't believe it was because of that. Lydia told me her mother got her the position, but of course lying is easier than telling me it was stiles." There was a pause between you and Theo. "He's a rival to your country, have you ever thought about telling the king." You didn't want to sound like you were betraying him yourself, but it may be the only way to break out of this prison.

"I considered it, many times. But I don't exactly like Hayden and she would be next in line for the throne. Once she has married a rich man that is. I'm sure they have many suitors waiting for when the time is right. The Problem is she's difficult."

"You sound like you were very close to the family. At least you know more about them than most." You took a step closer to Theo Suddenly having someone to talk to give you the clarity you had been searching for all day.

"I was, at one time" his tone of voice shifted from its usual charm to a gloomier drone, indicating you should shift the topic.

"Do you ever wonder how your life might be if things played out differently." This was something you had been considering for a long time, way before you even found out about the deal between your uncle and the king.

"Yes, it would probably be the same. I would have had to return home to learn how to govern my future country. I would still frown upon stiles and Lydia's... affair. But I feel like this isn't about me, so please continue. It is you that has had so much to deal with in such a short space of time."

"There are so many paths my life could've taken. If my parents never died, I'd rule my own country. If my second home hadn't been destroyed, I may have found something there to salvage. If the deal was never made for me to marry stiles, I would be at home and I would be happy. If I had decided to do something other than read, I would be none the wiser to their affair, as you call it."

"Your life has taken this path for a reason. And there's no reason for you to be unhappy here. Just because you're promised to a man you don't love doesn't mean you can't have another. That's the sacrifice royals have to make. They have to pretend to love people they hardly know. But there's a reason royals have mistresses. They aren't just people to be intimate with, they are people to have an actual connection with."

"There's one problem with that sentence. Mistresses. Princesses and queens... they don't have lovers. It's too risky and men get jealous." You now looked out over the castle grounds, seeing the glow of the town in the far distance and stars flooding the sky.

"I know but that's not fair. If you find someone you say... can talk to. What's to stop you from kissing them? Even if you are engaged to a guy who's in love with your maid." You had barely noticed him moving closer until you felt the fabric of his sleeve brush against your arm.

"What is it you're suggesting?" you asked with a smile plastered over your face, unable to contain it.

"I'm suggesting you and I take a walk tomorrow, maybe have a picnic. It's up to you, but I know I would enjoy the pleasure of your company no matter what."

"As would I. we shall meet at the back entrance to the castle tomorrow morning at around 11. A picnic sounds marvellous. I shall look forward to it."
