Can’t Get Enough: Prologue
“Farewell”
“Baby, she means nothing to me! You have to believe me!” He yelled.
“I can’t, you’re not even sober!” I yelled at him.
“I know, but I- I- I-” he stuttered then paused, “I love you.”
“If you did you wouldn’t have gone with her!”
“You told me you couldn’t take me!”
I sighed, he was right. “Fine.”
“Do you forgive me?” He asked almost begging. His blue eyes looked like they were about to cry an ocean.
“I can’t…”
“But- I’m- I’m sorry!” He pleaded.
His ‘but’ made me grow angrier. “Dougie, do you not understand what you did?” I asked him, raising my voice, not caring if his head was pounding and full of alcohol.
“I know but I thought it was you!”
“But it wasn’t! You know I would never do that with you!”
He stopped and stared at me. “With me?” he asked.
“With you.” I said coldly.
He stood in shock, not speaking a word. He ran his fingers through his hair still not saying a word.
“Maybe we should take a break…” I suggested even though it pained me to say the words.
“A break? Why?” Dougie asked.
“Because you have to get yourself together,” I said softly.
“It’s not because of what happened?” He asked. “This was coming eventually, wasn’t it?”
I didn’t know what to say to him. I didn’t want to tell him goodbye but I felt the need to. As if it was going to help us both, this break.
“We can still be friends…” I said to him. Although, it was probably the last thing he wanted to hear.
“You’ll be friends with me but you can’t stay my girlfriend?” He asked. “What’s the difference?”
“It’s complicated…” I answered because I didn’t know what else to say to him. I felt like was going to explode with emotions.
He nodded, “Fine, thank you for not trusting me.” He started walking towards the door. Once he got there, he stopped and turned around. “I’ll find my way home, don’t bother looking for me.” He opened the door and as he walked out, he didn’t look back.
With the slam of the door, I sank into the couch as my sobs echoed in the empty apartment.
