After that big deal in my hotel room this morning, we gathered up our baggage getting onto the elevator, and walked out to the lobby, once we got off waiting for the bus to pull up. Cassidee was oblivious as to what was going on let alone where we were going.
"Where are we going?" Cassidee asked.
I gently picked her up and set her in one of the lobby's chairs, taking notice that her left shoe was untied. I set my bags down and bent down to re-tie the shoestrings.
"Well.." I started "I make music, all those guys you saw today, they make music with me. We're a band."
"Is it good music?"
I chuckled at her question getting back to my feet and picked my bags back up. "Very good music. People like it so much that we travel places and sing for them."
I saw the bus pull up to the front and figured that we better get this journey started. Cassidee got up from her chair and headed straight for the door.
"Cassidee!"
She turned around, stopping, and looked at me. I walked up to her and took her hand in mine.
"Hold my hand. You can get easily lost in a sea of people."
We walked out to the bus and waited for the doors to open up. When they did I lead Cassidee up the steps and saw that the guys were already situating themselves.
"Is this a house?" Cassidee asked inspecting the inside of the bus.
"Sort of." I laughed. "Are you hungry? Thirsty?"
"Tired."
"Tired, hmm. Here I'll show you where you can rest for a while." I led her back to the bunks and pulled back the curtain to mine. I helped her get into the small space, putting her backpack away, and covered her with some blankets.
"Now don't get scared when you feel the bed moving, it's just the bus starting up. Do you need anything before I let you get to sleep?"
"Are you my dad?"
I sighed and looked down at the blankets for a brief second and then back to Cassidee. "I don't know that for sure, but we're going to figure some things out and see what happens. Now go to sleep, I'll check on you in a little bit." I closed the curtain and threw myself down on the couch.
"You think this is going to work out?" I asked Ricky as he came to the front.
"I don't know? You said she was no problem last night, right?"
I nodded my head. "Yeah, she was fine."
"Things will get straightened out, dude. I'm sure of it. Do you want her to be yours?"
I mean I never thought of myself having kids, maybe later down the road, but this was just brought on so suddenly. If Cassidee isn't mine, then what's going to happen to her? Her mother left her and she doesn't know anything about her father. No kid deserves to go through that.
"In such a short time I somehow already feel attached to her. She walked right in, fearless. You'd think most kids her age would gawk and freak out around us, but she seemed like she fit in."
"You want her to be yours.''
"What can I say? I like the kid, she's cool."
"Well before you become anymore ''attached'' you need to make a few phone calls."
"Yeah, I'm going to see if there's any place around us or in Indiana."
I grabbed my phone from my pocket and used Google maps for any nearby testing centers. While doing so, I came across one that said there was a testing lab located in a shopping plaza, and walk-ins were welcomed. I dialed the number and waited for someone to answer the phone.
"Hello?" A woman asked from the other line.
"Uhm, yes, hello, I was wondering if you do paternity tests?" I asked.
"We do. You can just walk right in."
"I can just walk in and get this done and the results will already be there?"
"Usually it takes a week for results of a DNA test to come back." Did she just say a week?!
But we have tours to do and we can't stay that long in one state! Maybe Angelo was right? Maybe this was a bad idea to bring Cassidee.
"There's no way the results could come in sooner? I'm going to be traveling."
"Is there a home address I can send them to?"
"Yeah, I guess that's my only option."
Even though this place was for walk-ins, I still wanted to make an appointment as soon as possible. Plus, I wanted it to be as confidential as possible too. Once we get to Indiana I get to see if I'm this little girl's father or not.
